GREENSBURG, PA: The Pitt-Greensburg baseball team combined some solid pitching and a potent offensive attack to amass 24 hits on their way to handing Muskingum University 9-4 and 7-1 defeats.
With the non-conference sweep Pitt-Greensburg improves to 10-7-1 on the season while Muskingum drops to 8-15.
Game 1After a one-run top of the firs by Muskingum, the Bobcat faithful wouldn't have to wait long to see the home team get on the board.
Greg Lynn (Ellwood City, PA, Ellwood City) would get things rolling in the bottom of the inning with a lead-off triple to centerfield and score one batter later on a
Dylan Pounds (Houston, PA, Chartiers-Houston) ground out.
Chad Jacob (Bridgeville, PA, Chartiers Valley) would step to the plate next, sending a blast over the leftfield fence, promptly giving UPG a 2-1 lead. Back to back singles by
Matt Germanoski (Ellwood City, PA, Ellwood City) and
Anthony Bozzuto (Greensburg, PA, Hempfield) followed by a
Mike Maleski (Pittsburgh, PA, Plum) walk would then load the bases. Two batters later, Germanoski crossed home plate for the third run of the inning when
Tyler Lilja (Greensburg, PA, Hempfield) was hit by a Muskingum pitch.
After a scoreless second inning, Muskingum would add a single run in the top of the third to bring the score to 3-1.
Pitt-Greensburg would once again answer, scoring four runs with their offensive opportunity in the third. With the bases loaded, a
John Buerkle (Jacksonville, FL, Fletcher) RBI single would score Bozzuto. A Lynn fielder's choice would then bring in Maleski followed by a Pounds walk and a Jacob two-run double that plated runs six and seven.
Two more runs by the Bobcats in the bottom of the fourth inning would extend the advantage to 9-2. The ninth run coming compliments of a Lynn one-run single that scored Buerkle who reached base on an error by the Fighting Muskies' second baseman.
Muskingum would add a pair of runs in the sixth inning but get no closer as
Cody Menges (Belle Vernon, PA, Belle Vernon) pitched his way to a scoreless seventh inning.
Billy Elliott (Ligonier, PA, Ligonier Valley) would improve to 4-1 on the year after giving UPG five solid innings in the start. Elliot would allow just four hits and three runs, only one earned while striking out five batters.
Joe Stavor (West Mifflin, PA, West Mifflin) would make a relief appearance in the sixth, going one inning and allow one hit, one run, and strike out one before Menges would close out the game.
Lynn and Jacob would lead the offensive charge in the opener. Lynn would go 3-5 including a double, a triple, and a stolen base while picking up two RBI and two runs scored. Jacob would finish 3-3 with a double, a homerun, one walk, a team high three RBI, and a run scored.
Game 2The Bobcats would get on top early in game two with back to back three run innings in the second and third. A one run double by
Matt Moyer (Greensburg, PA, Hempfield) would get the second inning scoring started. A Menges sacrifice bunt would plate Moyer for the second run followed by a Lynn single that scored
Brett Dadig (Pittsburgh, PA, Seton-La Salle) to put UPG up 3-0.
Moyer was back at it in the bottom of the third, this time placing a two-run double to left field to bring in Germanoski and Maleski. Dadig would hit a double of his own to score Moyer as the Bobcats now sat atop a 6-0 lead.
Pitt-Greensburg would add their seventh and final run in the fifth thanks to a Jacob sacrifice fly that brought Lynn home from third base.
The Fighting Muskies would finally get on the board in the sixth inning, adding a single run to settle the score at our final, 7-1.
Lynn, Maleski, Moyer, and Dadig would all collect two hits in the nightcap. Moyer would tally a team-high three RBI while also tying with Maleski for a team-high two runs scored.
Pounds earned the win in impressive fashion and improved to 2-0 on the season. He'd pitch six innings and allow just one run on five hits. Pounds would strikeout five batters and only walk one before making way for
Tyler Potutschnig (Flinton, PA, Glendale) to close out the game with a one hit scoreless seventh inning.
The Bobcats will now take to the road, heading to Ohio for a 4:00pm game with Baldwin Wallace on Thursday, April 9
th and a 2:00pm game at Case Western on Friday, April 10
th.
