Bobcats Bounce Back with Win Over Grove City

GREENSBURG, Pa: The Pitt-Greensburg women's basketball team got back on the winning track Monday evening after handling Grove City College 66-57. The victory evens Pitt-Greensburg's record at 5-5 as Grove City drops to 1-7.
One night removed from a tough loss to Westminster, the Bobcats came out roaring. A tenacious defense coupled with some scrappy and relentless effort held the Wolverines in check as UPG forced 24 turnovers which included 11 steals. Pitt-Greensburg would convert the turnovers as well, scoring 20 points from the giveaways to Grove City's 11. The Bobcat bench also came up big, outscoring GCC's bench 25-8.
Grove City held the lead for the majority of the first half, growing their advantage to as many as five points before the Bobcats snatched the lead with 6:17 remaining. A
Kayla Dames (Oakdale, PA, Chartiers Valley) layup compliments of an
Emily Nelson (New Stanton, PA, Hempfield) steal gave UPG a 1 point lead. One possession later, a
Lindsey McKamish (Pittsburgh, PA, Fox Chapel) 3-pointer would stretch their lead to 4 points. Pitt-Greensburg would lead by as many as 10 points before taking a 6 point advantage, 36-30 into halftime.
The second half would see Grove City start fast, knotting the game at 36-36, 2:37 into the half. Less than a minute later the Wolverines would enjoy their last lead of the game when a successful jumper gave them a 38-37 advantage with 16:53 left to play. Dames answered on the next possession, snatching the lead back for the Bobcats with another layup after a strong drive to the basket.
The score remained close over the next eight minutes. Pitt-Greensburg held onto the lead but could not stretch their advantage past 6 points until mounting a 13-5 run starting at the 8:16 mark that lasted to the final whistle. During the run, the Bobcat defense held the Wolverines to one made basket from the floor in the final 8 minutes of the game. When that final whistle blew, UPG picked up their fifth victory of the season at 66-57.
Pitt-Greensburg got major contributions from Dames and Nelson who combined for 37 of the teams 66 points. Dames finished with 21 points and 5 rebounds while Nelson recorded 16 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and a team leading 4 steals.
The Bobcats hit the road on Wednesday, January 8
th at 8:00pm to face Mount Aloysius College in the first of three straight AMCC road games.
