Men’s Tennis Clinches Play-off Berth with Win Over Pitt-Bradford

Box Score BRADFORD, Pa:  The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg men’s tennis team collected a big 8-1 victory over Pitt-Bradford to clinch a spot in this year’s Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play-offs.

The Bobcats got off to a good start winning two of three doubles matches.  Zachary Pivirotto (Export, PA, Franklin Regional) and Doug Smeltzer (Latrobe, PA, Greater Latrobe) posted an 8-2 win in the #1 doubles spot as well as another 8-2 victory in the #3 spot  by Alex Leonard (Scottdale, PA, Southmoreland) and Jakob Schafer (New Kensington, PA, Valley).

Pitt-Greensburg carried the momentum into the single matches sweeping all six matches on their way to the 8-1 team triumph.  The singles victories were recorded by #1 Pivirotto, 6-4/6-2, #3 Anthony Backowski (Harrison City, PA, Penn Trafford), 6-3/6-1, #4 Smeltzer, 6-0/6-0, #5 Shafer, 2-6/6-4/(10-8), #6 Leonard, 6-0/6-0, and by Jeremy Niemiec (Scottdale, PA, Southmoreland) in the match of the night.  Niemiec would battle for close to three hours to earn the #2 singles victory with a score of 7-6 (7-3)/6-7 (11-9)/(10-6).

Pitt-Greensburg is back at it tomorrow, Saturday April 6th, as they travel to Penn State Behrend to take on the AMCC’s top team at 1:00pm.
