Late goal lifts Franciscan over Pitt-Greensburg 2-1

GREENSBURG, Pa:   Franciscan University got a late goal in the 86th minute to lift the Barons to 2-1 victory over the Lady Bobcats on a cold and wet Wednesday afternoon at Ridilla Field.

Pitt-Greensburg falls to 7-8-1 overall and 3-4-1 in the AMCC with one conference game remaining.  The Barons improve to 11-4-1 overall and now sit tied atop the AMCC standings at 6-1.

On Wednesday, both teams battled through sloppy field conditions, remaining scoreless over the first 30 minutes.   Pitt-Greensburg got the first break of the game when a ball played across the box was misplayed by Franciscan keeper Mallory Garthwaite, leading to an open net goal from UPG senior Ashley Dickey.  It was the second goal of the season and 2nd of her career for the senior, playing in her final game in front of the home crowd at Ridilla Field.

The Bobcats carried a 1-0 lead into halftime as they recorded 6 shots on goal and established momentum over the first 45 minutes.  Shots were pretty even in the first half with the Barons holding a slight 7-6 edge while the Bobcats held a 2-1 edge in corner kicks.

However, the second half would belong to the Barons as they recorded 13 of their 20 shots and 4 of their 5 corner kicks in the second frame.

In the 57th minute, Baron midfielder Hannah Cooke squeezed a shot past UPG keeper Shannon Edwards to the lower right corner to tie the game 1-1.

The game would remain tied until the 86th minute when Julia Cocozza buried a one-time from teammate Ashley Ruttencutter for the eventual game winning goal.

Shannon Edwards was solid in goal for the Bobcats, making 4 of her 6 saves in the second half and really giving her team a chance to come out with a victory.

UPG recognized both members of its senior class on Wednesday, Dickey and Tiffanni Downey, who played in their final game at Ridilla Field.  Both players have made significant contributions both on and off the field to help with the resurgence of the Lady Bobcat soccer program over the last three seasons.

The Bobcats are hoping to give Downey and Dickey one more shot at postseason play, as the Bobcats are in a fight for one of the final two remaining playoff spots in the AMCC.  UPG will finish up AMCC play this Saturday (Oct 25) against conference leader Pitt-Bradford (6-1 AMCC).
