Bobcats move on to Championship Final
Box Score ERIE, PA: The Pitt-Greensburg men's tennis team's dream season continues on after a commanding 5-1 victory over Pitt-Bradford in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Championships. The 9-2 Bobcats find themselves just one win away from the program's first conference championship and the automatic NCAA bid that goes along with it. The #2 seeded Bobcats will face #1 seeded Franciscan University for a chance to represent the AMCC in the Division III NCAA national tennis tournament.
Pitt-Greensburg got off to a great start in Saturday's semifinal, picking up wins in all three doubles matches. The #1 pairing of
David Cenkner (Acme, PA, Mt. Pleasant) and
Tomas Monti (Pittsburgh, PA, North Allegheny) earned an 8-2 victory. In the #2 spot
Jeremy Niemiec (Scottdale, PA, Southmoreland) and
Anthony Backowski (Harrison City, PA, Penn Trafford) won 8-6 followed by the #3 pairing of
Tyler Fox (Mt. Pleasant, PA, Southmoreland) and
Matt Kimmel (Somerset, PA, Somerset) who battled to a 9-7 triumph.
After picking up three doubles wins, the Bobcats would need just two singles victories to clinch a trip to Sunday's final. #1 Cenkner and #3 Niemiec would deliver. Both would make quick work of their counterparts with Cenkner winning 6-3, 6-1 and Niemiec closing the door with a pair of 6-3 victories.
Tomorrow's AMCC final is scheduled for an 11:30am start at the Westwood Racquet Club in Erie, PA.
