Women's soccer loses heartbreaker to W&J, 4-3 in 2OT
Box Score GREENSBURG, Pa: The Pitt-Greensburg women's soccer team gave visiting Washington and Jefferson College all they could handle on Sunday afternoon, before falling 4-3 in double overtime.
Hayley Skovira buried a free kick into the back of the net, lifting the Presidents to the victory just 2 minutes into the second overtime period.
Pitt-Greensburg trailed by scores of 1-0, 2-1, and 3-2 in the game before a goal in the 80
th minute by freshman
Abigail Pasierb set the stage for extra time.
W&J got the scoring started, taking a 1-0 lead just under 5 minutes into the game with a goal by Jess Skovira. The Bobcats answered back in the 16
th minute when junior Courtney Carroll beat W&J keeper Morgan Kinyon with a blast to the upper 90 from just outside the box.
The Presidents tacked on an additional first half goal to hold a 2-1 advantage at the break.
The Bobcats evened the score early in the second half when
Alexandra Dimoff put a shot on goal that found the back of the net, tying the game 2-2 in the 53
rd minute.
W&J didn't allow the Bobcats a chance to take the lead, as they struck quickly in the 57
th minute, taking a 3-2 lead. Pasierb's goal gave the gritty Bobcats their third comeback of the game, but unfortunately a 4
th comeback wouldn't be possible, with the sudden death overtime rules.
Pitt-Greensburg went toe to toe with W&J in shots, with the Presidents holding a slight 17-16 edge. UPG keeper
Shannon Edwards made 7 saves in goal for the Bobcats on the day.
Despite the loss, it was a dramatic step forward for the Pitt-Greensburg women's soccer team under third-year Head Coach Chuck Wigle. The Bobcats had lost the previous two seasons to W&J by a combined score of 15-1.
The Bobcats (2-3) will set out to even their record on Thursday when they host Westminster College in a non-conference match at Ridilla Field. Match time is 4pm.
