Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Bobcats' season ends with 2-1 playoff loss to Penn St. Altoona

GREENSBURG, Pa:  The 2015 Pitt-Greensburg women's soccer season came to an abrupt ending on Saturday afternoon, falling at home to Penn State Altoona by a final score of 2-1 in the AMCC Playoffs 1st round contest.

The Lions got on the board first in the 33rd minute, when reserve Shoshana Mahoney collected her own rebound off a blocked shot and was able to fire off a second shot into an open net, giving Altoona a 1-0 lead.

UPG was able to stave off a couple dangerous chances by the Lions in the final minutes of the first half, and the two teams went into halftime with the score still 1-0 Altoona.

In the 55th minute, Altoona's Brittany Allison extended the Lions lead to 2-0 with a shot inside the box that beat Bobcat keeper Shannon Edwards.

Mahoney set up for a penalty kick in the 78th minute that would have all but sealed the game for the Lions, but instead she sent the shot wide left and gave the Bobcats life heading down the home stretch of the second half.

Feeling the sense of urgency, Pitt-Greensburg began to apply some pressure, starting with a shot ripped by freshman Taylor Oberle that had beat the keeper high but rang off the crossbar and sailed out of bounds.  Just a minute later, the Bobcats finally broke through with a shot outside the box by Kayleen Schwegler that beat Lions keeper Mackenzie Strubhar, making it a 2-1 game with just over 7 minutes remaining in the game.

Unable to get anything going in the final minutes, and after three consecutive offsides calls against the Bobcats, the final horn sounded and the Lions left Greensburg with a 2-1 victory.

Playing in their final game as a Bobcat, seniors Courtney Carroll, Caitlin Welsh, and Mckenzie Plovock finish their careers on one of the most successful Pitt-Greensburg women's soccer teams in history.

The 2015 squad finishes 7-7-3 and their 3rd place regular season finish ties for the highest finish in the program since 2005.  Wigle's 2012 team (Carroll and Welsh's freshman year) also finished the regular season in third place.

After taking down the AMCC's top two teams and earning a home playoff game as the #3 seed, the bar is set high for the 2016 Pitt-Greensburg women's soccer program.
