Men’s Tennis swats Spartans for First Win of the Season
Box Score BUFFALO, NY: The Pitt-Greensburg men's tennis team got their conference season started on a winning note, downing D'youville 8-1 on Saturday.
The victory puts Pitt-Greensburg at 1-2 on the season, but more importantly opens Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play with a 1-0 mark for the Bobcats. Conversely, the Spartans drop to 0-2 in conference play and 0-5 on the season.
The Bobcats jumped out to an early lead after taking all three of the doubles matches. The #1 pairing of
Jeremy Niemiec (Scottdale, PA, Southmoreland) and
Anthony Backowski (Harrison City, PA, Penn Trafford) triumphed 8-6, followed by an 8-4 win by the #2 pair of
Tyler Fox (Mt. Pleasant, PA, Southmoreland) and
Izaak Fulmer-Moffat (Derry, Pa, Derry), and finally an 8-2 victory by
Jakob Schafer (New Kensington, PA, Valley) and
Luke Zeleznik (Scottdale, PA, Southmoreland).
Pitt-Greensburg would then take five of six from the Spartans in the singles portion, with their lone loss coming in a tight match between the AMCC's reigning Player of the Week, Wei Yen Huang and Niemiec. Neimiec would give all he could in tough split set match that went to a 10-7 tie-break in favor of D'Youville's #1.
