GREENSBURG, Pa: A dominant display by the Pitt-Greensburg women's basketball team led to a lopsided 85-49 victory over the visiting Lions of Penn State Altoona. The Bobcats 36 point victory exacted a bit of revenge for a 17 point road loss earlier this season to the Lions.
With the win Pitt-Greensburg improves their Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference record to 6-5 and overall mark to 8-10. PSA falls to 3-9 in conference play and 3-15 on the season.
For the second straight game, the Bobcats got big production from sophomore
Kelsey Oddis (Lower Burrell, PA, Burrell). After a 16 point 24 rebound performance at D'Youville on Saturday, Oddis followed with another double-double of 29 points on and 14 rebounds on Wednesday.
An Oddis layup at the 6:20 mark of the first quarter would break a 6-6 tie and ignite a 17-2 UPG run lasting to 1:24 remaining. The run was capped by an
Amanda Estok (Monroeville, PA, Gateway) three, giving the Bobcats a 23-8 advantage. Altoona would close out the half with a pair of baskets, but another Estok three-pointer would bring us to the first break's score of 26-12.
Seven straight points by the Lions to start off the second would cut into the deficit 26-19, but prompt a response by Pitt-Greensburg. The Bobcats reply was a 16-2 run that spanned the final 4:45 of the quarter. Another Oddis layup as time expired would give UPG a 42-21 lead as the teams broke for halftime.
Pitt-Greensburg shot 47% from the floor in the first half compared to the 33% posted by Penn State Altoona.
The Bobcats would add to their lead in the third, stretching it to as many as 37 points. They'd outscore the visitors 26-13 over the quarter and walk into the fourth holding a 68-34 advantage.
On two occasions in the fourth quarter, UPG would extend the advantage to 42 points. The first coming on a
Sylvia Stuart (Harrisburg, PA, Central Dauphin East) layup at the 5:34 mark and the second from an Oddis layup a minute later, bringing the score to 79-37. The Bobcats could then cruise through the final minutes on their way to the 85-49 final.
UPG would finish the game outshooting Penn State Altoona 49% to 37% from the floor and 29%-18% from three. They'd also hold advantages in rebounding 43-29, points in the paint 56-28, points off turnovers 29-13, bench points 18-8, steals 15-13, and win the turnover battle 17 to 27.
Individually Oddis would lead the way with her career-high 29 points. Stuart would chip in with 17 followed by
Chianti Sivek's (Finleyville, PA, Ringgold) 11 points.
Emily Nelson (New Stanton, PA, Hempfield) added a season-high 10 assists to go along with seven points and four steals. Estok and
Casey Hamilton (Greensburg, PA, Hempfield) would each finish with eight points.
Up next is a weekend trip to branch campus rival Pitt-Bradford. The Bobcats are set for a 3:00pm Saturday showdown with the Panthers on January 30
