STUEBENVILLE, OH: Despite double-digit scoring performances from four different Bobcats, the Pitt-Greensburg women's basketball team fell on the road to Franciscan University by a 75-65 score.
The loss evens UPG's Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference record at 2-2 and moves their overall mark to 4-7. Franciscan improves to 1-3 in conference play and 2-8 on the season.
After an
Emily Nelson (New Stanton, PA, Hempfield) layup opened the games scoring, a back-and-forth quarter would ensue. The first six minutes would see the lead change on five occasions with the Barons clinging to a 10-9 advantage with 3:36 left. A 7-2 run by the Barons would then close out the quarter with the Bobcats trailing 17-11.
A Franciscan three-pointer would open the second's scoring, placing UPG at a nine point disadvantage. But a minute later and still down nine, 22-13 the Bobcats would mount a 7-0 run capped by a
Sylvia Stuart (Harrisburg, PA, Central Dauphin East) layup at the 5:55 mark to get within a bucket 22-20. After trading baskets and remaining in striking distance of the Barons over the next two minutes, it would take a
Chianti Sivek (Finleyville, PA, Ringgold) layup with 3:33 left in the half to bring UPG even at 26-26. Franciscan would answer with an 8-0 run before a pair of Stuart free throws with eight tics left brought us to our halftime score, 34-28 in favor of Franciscan.
The second half would see the Barons extend their lead to double-digits. Pitt-Greensburg would get close in the third, cutting the lead to 52-46 on a
Kelsey Oddis (Lower Burrell, PA, Burrell) three-pointer with 1:45 remaining in the quarter.
The Bobcats would get as close as nine points in the fourth after a Sivek three brought the score to 72-63 with 1:27 left to play. A bucket by each team would round out Wednesday's scoring and bring us to the 75-65 final.
Pitt-Greensburg would outshoot the Barons 44% to 38% but lose the battle of the boards by a 47-29 margin. Franciscan would also find their way free throw line frequently, doubling the Bobcat attempts 25-11.
The Pitt-Greensburg offense was paced by a foursome of double-digit scorers, led by Sivek's 19. Nelson would finish with 14 points followed closely by Oddis with 12, and Stuart's 10.
