Hawks hold off Women’s Hoops

HAMBURG, NY:   The Pitt-Greensburg women's basketball team suffered a third quarter shooting slump at Hilbert, leading to a 62-54 defeat to the Hawks on Saturday.

The loss drops the Bobcats to 10-13 on the year and 8-8 in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play.  UPG continues to reside in fourth place with two regular season games remaining.  Hilbert improves to 10-13 overall and 6-10 in conference action, but still sit on the outside looking in at the AMCC playoff picture from the seventh spot.

Pitt-Greensburg would throw the first punch on Saturday, outscoring the Hawks 13-9 in the first quarter and after scoring the game's first points, UPG would not trail over the opening ten minutes.

The second quarter saw the Hawks battle back, swapping the lead with the Bobcats on two occasions before a Sylvia Stuart (Harrisburg, PA, Central Dauphin East) free throw tied things up a 20-20 at the 5:08 mark.  Seven straight points would follow capped by an Amanda Estok (Monroeville, PA, Gateway) three with 2:40 left to stretch the UPG advantage to 27-20.

Hilbert closed out the half on a 6-0 run to bring us to the 27-26 halftime score in favor of the Bobcats.  Pitt-Greensburg shot a solid 44% in the first half with Stuart leading the offense with nine points.

A Lyndy Baer (Hollsopple, PA, Conemaugh Township) three-pointer 2:33 into the third deadlocked the score at 30-30 but prompted a 12-4 Hilbert run the spanned the remainder of the quarter.  Heading into the fourth, the Bobcats would trail by eight, 42-34.

Another Baer three at the 5:51 mark of the fourth quarter was a close as the Bobcats would get, bringing them within three at 46-43.  But the Hawks stood strong down the stretch on their way to the 62-54 final.

The second half shooting slipped to 29.6% for UPG while Hilbert improved to 56.5%.  On the night Pitt-Greenburg converted 36.5% from the floor.

Stuart finished the night with 16 points to lead Pitt-Greensburg.  Emily Nelson (New Stanton, PA, Hempfield) also finished in double-digits with 11.

The road games continue for the Bobcats with a Wednesday, September 17th showdown at Mount Aloysius at 8:00pm up next.
