Bobcats open big weekend with 8-1 win over Penn State Altoona

ALTOONA, Pa:  The Pitt-Greensburg men's tennis team took a big step towards clinching an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Championships berth, by defeating Penn State Altoona 8-1 on Friday evening.

The Bobcats take a firm grasp on third place after improving to 3-1 in AMCC play and 6-2 overall.  The Lions currently reside in fourth place with a 2-3 conference mark and a 3-4 record on the year.

The doubles portion was captured by Pitt-Greensburg, who swept all three spots to jump out to a commanding lead.

2. Tyler Fox/Izaak Fulmer-Moffat (GRN) def. Carlos Cevallos/Jonathan D'Arcy (ALT) 8-3
3. Luke Zeleznik/Michael Meyer (GRN) def. Thomas Graden/Tony Vergari (ALT) 8-6 

The Bobcat victories continued to roll in during singles play with straight set wins by #1 Zachary Pivirotto (Export, PA, Franklin Regional), #2 Tyler Fox (Mt. Pleasant, PA, Southmoreland), #4 Izaak Fulmer-Moffat (Derry, Pa, Derry), and #6 Michael Meyer (Pittsburgh, PA, Keystone Oaks).  #3 Doug Smeltzer (Latrobe, PA, Greater Latrobe) also emerged victorious after outlasting his Altoona counterpart in a marathon match.  He'd open with a 7-6 triumph in set one, fall 6-7 in the second stanza, then return for an 11-9 tie-break win. 

The Bobcats are right back to action tomorrow for their second of three conference matches to be played this weekend.  Up first is a trip to league leading Franciscan University for a 4:00pm Saturday match.  Next is the regular season finale, a Sunday road game at Mount Aloysius, slated for a 1:00pm start.
