STEUBENVILLE, Ohio- Trailing 3-2 later in the second half, Franciscan netted two goals in the final 10 minutes of regulation to defeat the Pitt-Greensburg women's soccer team 4-3 in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament Quarterfinal match Saturday afternoon.
Franciscan advances to face the #2 seed Mt. Aloysius in the semifinal round, Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 pm in Cresson, Pa. The other semifinal match will feature #4 seed D'Youville and top seed Penn State Behrend. The winner of each semifinal match will advance to next Saturday's (Nov. 4) Championship match, with the winner receiving an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
Camille Hickman's strike from just outside the 18-yard box broke a 2-2 tie and gave the Bobcats a 3-2 lead with just over 20 minutes remaining in regulation.
The Barons would use some late magic to upend the upset minded Bobcats. Gracie Tillman tied the match in the 80th minute, as
Shannon Edwards saved an inital attempt from Emily Wieszczek, but Tillman managed to corralle the rebound and tie the game with 10 minutes remaining in regulation.
It looked as if the game was headed for overtime as the two sides remained tied at three, but Wiezczek took a pass from Clare Kennedy and her shot found the back of the net to life the Barons to the 4-3 comeback win.
Franciscan outshot Pitt-Greensburg by a count of 15-6, but the Bobcats had an efficent afternoon shooting, finding the back of the net on 50% of its shot attempts.
In her final game as a Bobcat, Edwards recorded six saves and for the senior, totaled 77 saves and posted an .802 save percentage.
Erika Caldro gave the Bobcats the lead just 13 minutes into the contest with her second goal of the season.
Franciscan answered with goals in the 25th and 29th minute, but
Bri Burgunder would tie the match at two on her 19th strike of the season. Burgunder ends the season ranked second all-time for goals in a single-season (19) and third with 42 points.
Pitt-Greensburg ends the season with an overall record of 9-8-1 and a 4-5-0 mark in conference action.
