Lyndy Baer's layup with 5.8 seconds left gave the Pitt-Greensburg women's basketball team to a 70-67 victory over Pitt-Bradford in the regular-season finale Saturday afternoon.
Tied at 67 after a layup by
Colleen Murphy with just 47 seconds left,
Jenna Cole hauled down a defensive rebound after a Brittany Watts miss to give the Bobcats the ball for the final possession.
After calling a timeout with 22 seconds remaining and advancing the ball across halfcourt, Pitt-Greensburg would draw up a play with a chance to win the game or with a miss, send the two teams to overtime.
The Bobcats inbounded the ball and the senior point guard Baer, drove to the hoop and scored the winning layup with just 5.8 seconds left on the clock.
Pitt-Bradford would call its final timeout but its final shot was no good and Baer iced the game with a free-throw on the ensuing posession, Â Â giving the Bobcats a 70-67 victory.
The Bobcats trailed 34-27 at the halftime break despite shooting shooting just under 41% in the opening 20 minutes, but put together an incredible second half hitting 58.6% from the field and holding the Panthers to just 14-of-42 for a 33.3% clip.
Pitt-Greensburg had an efficient day shooting the basketball connecting on 26-of-51 from the field and outrebounded the Panthers 44-35, including outscoring Pitt-Bradford 42-38 in the paint. Despite allowing 21 offensive rebounds, the Bobcats held Pitt-Bradford to just 16 second chance points, while scoring 13 points themselves.
Baer and Cole led the way offensive for the Bobcats with 19 points, while
Sylvia Stuartt also was in double-figures with 18 points and seven boards.
Casey Hamilton put together a dominant day on the glass hauling down a game-high 14 rebounds and also contributed dishing out five assists.
The victory for the Bobcats completes the season-sweep of Pitt-Bradford and is the first victory over the Panthers on their home court since a 63-58 win on Feb. 1, 2014.
