Women's Soccer Upended In AMCC Tournment First Round Matchup Against Penn State Altoona

ALVERTON- The no.4 seed and host Pitt-Greensburg women's soccer team saw its run in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament come to an abrupt end Saturday afternoon, falling by a score of 3-1 to the no. 5 seed Penn State Altoona.

Pitt-Greensburg ends the season with a 9-8-1 overall record, while Penn State Altoona improves to 9-7-2. Altoona advances to Wednesday's AMCC semifinal where they will take on the top seed Penn State Behrend at 5 pm.

The Bobcats jumped out to a quick 1-0 advantage just 2:39 into the match, but the Lions responded with three unanswered goals to complete the upset victory.

For the majority of Saturday's contest, Pitt-Greensburg carried the pace of play and continued to create scoring opportunities, outshooting Altoona 23-8 and totaling eight corner kicks compared to just two for the Lions. Bri Burgunder led the way for the Bobcats tallying a match-high nine attempts, four of which she put on goal, while Allie Grimm, McKenzie Huntebrinker, Tiffany Michalek, and Bri Tyson each added multi-shot efforts.

The Bobcats started the game off quickly and jumped out to a 1-0 advantage just 2:39 into the match. Burgunder dribbled the ball along the goal line, cut quickly into the 18-yard box and drilled a shot far post to put Pitt-Greensburg up 1-0 with her ninth goal of the season.

Pitt-Greensburg continued to bombard the Lions goal with scoring opportunities from Grimm and Huntebrinker, but Riley Barrett made two quality stops to keep the score at 1-0.

Altoona drew a foul roughly 30 yards from the Pitt-Greensburg goal, which resulted in a free kick in the 12th minute. Sydney Emershaw stepped up and fired a curling shot towards the far post, which snuck in the upper right hand corner to tie the match at one.

Following the goal, the Bobcats once again went on the attack and recorded six shots and three corner kicks over the next 12 minutes, but were unable to break the 1-1 tie.

Penn State continued to hang out and were rewarded in the 27th minute as Emerhsaw netted her second of the afternoon on a free-kick. Despite dominating the first half, outshooting the Lions 13-6 and 4-2 in corner kicks, Pitt-Greensburg trailed 2-1 at halftime.

Coming out of the halftime intermission, Sadie McConnell had a breakaway opportunity, but Lauren Yoder sprinted towards the ball and made a great sliding save to keep the match at a one-goal game. Just three minutes later though, McConnell found the back of the net and sent Altoona to the 3-1 victory.
