Women's Basketball Falls To Penn State Altoona In Defensive Battle

GREENSBURG- Despite a career-high 17 points by Cat Gollihugh, the Pitt-Greensburg women's basketball team fell 57-46 to Penn State Altoona, Wednesday evening inside Chambers Hall.

Gollihugh put together a solid evening en route to her career night, hitting 5-of-7 from behind the three-point line, totaling two steals, a block, and two rebounds. The 17 points eclipses her previous high of 13 points, which she recorded earlier this season at Pitt-Bradford.

Maddy Coddington added nine points, seven rebounds, and dished out three assists, while Nadege Durand posted her 15th game with double-digit rebounds totaling 14 boards in defeat.

The Bobcats scored 24 of their 46 points from behind the three-point arc and held the Lions to just 4-of-19 from three, but Altoona utilized the free-throw line to its advantage, connecting on 15-of-18, which included a perfect 7-of-7 in the first half.

Both teams struggled offensively in the opening 20 minutes of play with both sides shooting under 30%. Following the halftime break, Pitt-Greensburg and Altoona each shot over 30%. Despite coming up short in the win column, the Bobcats shot 36% in the second half of play and held the Lions to just 33% from the field.

Also on the defensive end, Pitt-Greensburg held Altoona's top-two leading scorers under their season average. Entering Wednesday's matchup, Alexis Cannistraci sat second in the AMCC averaging 17.1 points per game and was held to 15 total points, including just five in the first half.

Finnley Christine, who ranks fourth in the conference with 16.0 points-per-game, was held to just eight on 4-of-21 from the field. In the matchup between the two schools earlier this season, Christine scored a game-high 23, 13 of which came in the second half.

Both sides got off to a slow start to begin the first quarter as Penn State Altoona jumped out to a 6-0 lead following Christine's jumper with 7:51 left, but that would be the last point for the Lions until the halfway mark of the opening stanza. The Bobcats would get on the board with 5:49 remaining on a three-pointer by Alycia Lynch.

Altoona stretched its lead to 13-6 with 39 seconds left in the quarter on a layup by Paige Burk, but the next time down the court, Gollihugh drained a three to cut the deficit to 13-9 heading into the second quarter.

Pitt-Greensburg carried the momentum into the second quarter scoring six of the first eight points to get within two (15-13) on a bucket by Durand. Following Durand's bucket, Altoona responded with a 12-2 run over the remainder of the first half to lead 27-17 at the break.

The Bobcats got off to a quick start to begin the second half scoring seven of the first nine points to cut the deficit to five (29-24) on a jumper by Gollihugh. Similar to the end of the opening 20 minutes, Altoona responded with an 8-0 run to push its lead to 14 (38-24) with just over four minutes left in the third period.

Altoona would hold a double-digit advantage for much of the remainder of the evening. The Bobcats would get within eight midway through the fourth quarter on a three by Gollihugh, but on the next possession, the Lions drained a three to once again push their lead to 11.

Maddy Coddington hit two free throws late in the fourth quarter, but Penn State Altoona would hold on for a 57-46 victory.

Pitt-Greensburg returns to action Saturday afternoon, when it takes the trek to Buffalo, N.Y. to face Medaille for a 1 p.m. tip-off.
