Women's Basketball Has Its Season Come To An End With Loss To La Roche In AMCC Semifinals

PITTSBURGH- The Pitt-Greensburg women's basketball team made a valiant comeback after trailing by as much as 19 in the first half and got to within four late in the fourth quarter, but ultimately would come up just short, falling 60-54 Friday evening in the semifinal round of the 2020 AMCC Tournament.

La Roche advances to Saturday's championship, where it will take on the winner of Hilbert and D'Youville.

Pitt-Greensburg ends its season with a 17-10 record, its most wins since the 2014-15 campaign (18).

The Bobcats got off to a rough start trailing 17-3 at the end of 10 minutes of play and La Roche would push its lead to as much as 19 in the opening 20 minutes of action. Pitt-Greensburg would claw its way back with a 10-2 run to end the half and would trail 33-22 at the halftime intermission.

Ayanna Mazyck came out hot at the start of the second half for the Redhawks drilling back-to-back three pointers on the opening two possessions to push the lead back to 17. Nadege Durand knocked in a jumper with 93 seconds left in the frame to cut the deficit to 12 heading into the final quarter of play.

Solid defense and rebounding on both ends of the court, kept UPG in the game and Sidney McCully's jumper at the 6:53 mark trimmed the deficit to single-digits (53-44).

Later in the quarter, McCully's layup got the Bobcats to within four with 56 seconds left in regulation. The Bobcats would force a Redhawk turnover on the next possession and UPG called its final timeout and advance the ball into the frontcourt.

Out of the timeout, Durand had a great look at the hoop, but her attempt was no good and the Redhawks would come down with the rebound. Shaundrea Butler hit both free-throws on the ensuing possession and the Redhawks would hold on for the victory.

Durand paced the Bobcats with her 13th double-double of the season, tallying 18 points and hauling down a game-high 13 rebounds. Durand also dished out four assists in the loss. McCully gave UPG great production off the bench, pouring in 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Maddie Sitler added nine points, and Cat Gollihugh tallied eight points, and six boards.

Defensively, Pitt-Greensburg forced 18 turnovers, which they converted into 18 points and held a 38-35 advantage in the rebounding department.

La Roche was aided by its three-point shooting in the victory. The Redhawks connected on seven three-pointers in the opening 20 minutes of action, which propelled them to a 33-22 halftime lead, but following the halftime break, La Roche was held to just 9-of-25 shooting, including 3-of-9 from behind the three-point arc.
