Men's Tennis Swings Past Medaille Sunday Afternoon

BUFFALO, N.Y.- The Pitt-Greensburg men's tennis team defeated Medaille by a score of 6-3 in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference match Sunday afternoon at the South Towns Tennis Club.

With the win, Pitt-Greensburg moves to 4-3 overall and 4-1 in AMCC matches. After dropping its AMCC opener 6-3 at Penn State Behrend on Sept. 7, the Bobcats have now won four-straight conference matches and currently sit in second place in the conference standings.

In Sunday's match, UPG got off to a solid start picking up wins in two of the three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead heading into singles play. The pairing of Turner Price and Vaughn Hunkele posted their fifth victory of the year (8-6), while Andrew Oden and Francisco Garcia moved to 5-2 on the season with an identical 8-6 win at #3 doubles.

In singles action, Pitt-Greensburg picked up wins in four of the six matches and would go on for the 6-3 win.

Price and Hunkele also won their respective singles matches to both pick up their second win of the afternoon. Price rolled to an easy 6-0, 6-0 win in the top singles spot, while Hunkele gutted out a 6-4, 1-6, 10-7 win at #3 singles.

Garcia also recorded a win for the Bobcats at #6 singles, picking up a straight-set 7-5, 6-2 victory. Terrance Madarish also was victorious in his singles match (6-4, 7-5) for UPG.

Oden and Jason McCarthy were deadlocked in a marathon match at the #5 singles spot. The two players split the opening two sets, requiring a third-set tiebreak to decide the winner. The tie-breaker required a combined 26 points, but after two fantastic efforts, it was McCarthy that outlasted the Pitt-Greensburg junior, 14-12.

Pitt-Greensburg returns to the court Friday, March 13 when they take on cross-town opponent St. Vincent at 5:30 pm.
