Women's Tennis Wins Program's First AMCC Tournament Championship

WEXFORD, PA - The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg women's tennis team etched its name in the history books this afternoon with their first Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament Championship in program history. The Bobcats took down the #2 seed and 14-time-champion Penn State Behrend, 5-4, to claim the gold.

Pitt-Greensburg finished off a sweep of the AMCC this season as the Regular Season and Tournament Champions with an 8-0 record against conference opponents. They avenged last season's championship loss to the Lions with a match for the ages today.

Doubles:

There was no time wasted in this hotly contested title bout, as the #1 doubles match needed a tiebreaker to decide it. Cathryn Rossi and Isabella Lane were able hold on to an 8-7 win in tiebreak fashion to start things off for the Blue and Gold.

Abigail Rosman and Amber Sterrett took care of business in the #2 position with an 8-3 victory.

The Lions salvaged doubles match #3, 8-2, to make it 2-1 Bobcats heading into singles play.

Singles:

Penn State Behrend stormed out to a 4-2 lead after winning the first three reported singles matches.

The Lions evened the match up at 2-2 with a 6-0, 6-0 win in the #4 spot, which was the first singles match to finish. Then, they took singles #1 and #6 in that order by identical 6-2, 6-1 scores to put the Bobcats' backs against the wall.

With no more room for error, Lane came up huge with a tiebreak win in the #5 match. She fell behind early with a 6-4 loss in the first set, but then forced a tiebreaker after a 6-3 set two win. Lane kept the season alive with a dominating 7-3 win in set three.

Sterrett and Rosman came through, in the last two singles matches to be finished, to put Pitt-Greensburg on top of the AMCC. Sterrett won in the #3 spot 6-2, 6-3, while Rosman closed out the championship by outlasting her opponent 6-4, 7-5 in the #2 match.

The Bobcats have earned the AMCC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament with today's win. The NCAA Tournament takes place in May, and it will be Pitt-Greensburg's first time in the field.
