Bella Carroto broke a scoreless tie in the 67th minute and goalkeeper Kira Howcroft turned away all six shots she faced as the Pitt-Greensburg women's soccer team earned a 1-0 road victory over Washington & Jefferson on Wednesday evening at Alexandre Stadium.
The win moved the Bobcats to 2-2 on the season, while Washington & Jefferson fell to 1-2.
Both sides generated opportunities in a scoreless opening 45 minutes. Howcroft made saves in the fifth and 40th minutes to keep the Presidents off the board, while Layla Widenhofer produced Pitt-Greensburg's best chance of the half with a shot on goal in the 31st minute. The Bobcats and Presidents each attempted three shots before halftime.
Washington & Jefferson applied pressure early in the second half, including an Alexa Taylor attempt that struck the woodwork in the 50th minute. Howcroft then denied Taylor less than four minutes later to preserve the scoreless contest.
Pitt-Greensburg found the breakthrough at 66:41. Carroto scored the game's lone goal to put the Bobcats ahead, 1-0. It was one of two shots on goal for Carroto, who led the Pitt-Greensburg attack.
From there, the Bobcats' defense made the advantage stand. Howcroft stopped Madison Rose in the 73rd minute and Zailey Tillar in the 84th before making one final save on Taylor with just over a minute remaining. She finished with six saves in the shutout, playing all 90 minutes in goal.
Washington & Jefferson held a narrow 9-8 advantage in total shots, but Pitt-Greensburg put five of its eight attempts on frame.
Carroto finished with two shots, both on goal, and the game-winning tally. Ella Smith, Riley Gesinski and Widenhofer also put attempts on frame for Pitt-Greensburg. Howcroft's six-save performance secured the clean sheet and helped the Bobcats return home with the 1-0 victory.
