The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg women's soccer team opened its 2026 season with a 2-1 victory over Saint Vincent College on Tuesday at Ridilla Field. The Bobcats scored twice in the opening 25 minutes before turning in a determined defensive effort to preserve the one-goal advantage and start the year 1-0.
Pitt-Greensburg struck first in the 13th minute when Bella Carroto found the back of the net off an assist from Riley Gesinski, putting the Bobcats ahead 1-0 at the 12:34 mark.
Gesinski went from facilitator to scorer less than 12 minutes later. She doubled the Pitt-Greensburg advantage with an unassisted goal at 24:12, giving the Bobcats a 2-0 lead. Saint Vincent responded just 1:26 later when Bella Meder scored off an Emma Koller assist, sending Pitt-Greensburg into halftime with a 2-1 advantage.
The second half belonged to the Bobcats' defense.
Saint Vincent pushed forward in search of the equalizer and generated 15 shots over the final 45 minutes, but Pitt-Greensburg held firm. Goalkeeper Kira Howcroft was at the center of that effort, making eight saves in the second half alone as the Bobcats protected their lead despite being outshot 15-1 in the period.
"Super proud of the effort & commitment to defend as a team," head coach Chuck Wigle said.
That commitment was especially important down the stretch. Saint Vincent put shots on goal in the 69th, 74th, 78th and 80th minutes, and Howcroft denied each opportunity. She added another stop in the 87th minute to help Pitt-Greensburg see out the victory.
Howcroft finished the afternoon with 12 saves, allowing just one goal while playing all 90 minutes. Saint Vincent totaled 22 shots and put 13 on goal, while Pitt-Greensburg finished with eight shots and four on target. The Bearcats also held a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Gesinski led the Bobcats offensively with a three-point performance, scoring what proved to be the game-winning goal while assisting on Carroto's opener. Carroto scored on her lone shot of the contest, while Isabella Swartz and Ella Smith also put shots on frame for Pitt-Greensburg.
The victory moves Pitt-Greensburg to 1-0-0 on the season, while Saint Vincent falls to 0-1-0. The Bobcats return to action Friday when they travel to Susquehanna.
