Chuck Wigle enters his ninth season as head coach of the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg's women's soccer program in 2020.
This past season (2018), Wigle guided the Bobcats to their best season in program history, capturing the program's first AMCC Regular-Season and Tournament Championship as well as NCAA Tournament appearance. Pitt-Greensburg posted a 18-0-1 record and the home field advantage throughout the AMCC Playoffs. The Bobcats advanced to the program's second-ever appearance in the AMCC Championship with a 1-0 overtime victory over D'Youville.Tiffany Michalek's header off a Jenna Conty corner kick propelled the Bobcats to a berth in the AMCC Championship against Penn State Behrend. In the championship match, it didn't take long for the Bobcats to strike as Allie Grimm's goal just 83 seconds into the contest put UPG in front and would go on to capture the program's first title with a 3-2 win over Behrend.
For their efforts, freshman forward Ashley Lucas was named AMCC Newcomer and Player of the Year, goalkeeper Lauren Yoder was named Defensive Player of the Year, and Chuck Wigle was named Coach of the Year. In the program's first appearance in the AMCC Tournament, Pitt-Greensburg traveled to take on the University of Chicago, where they would have their season come to an end with a 5-0 defeat. In total,Pitt-Greensburg has six of its players land on All-Conference Teams (Lucas- 1st Team, Michalek- 1st Team, Yoder- 1st Team, Alexsia Barlamas- 1st Team, Tori Conroy- 1st Team, Brooke Ianarelli- 3rd Team). Lucas, Conroy, and Michalek were also named to All-Region Teams.Â
In 2018, Wigle became the program’s all-time winningest coach when he guided the Bobcats to a 1-0 shutout victory at La Roche. In the victory against the Redhawks, Lexi Fetterman made four saves en route to the shutout in her first career start at goalkeeper.Â
Wigle guided Pitt-Greensburg to a 9-8-1 mark and qualified for the AMCC Tournament for a fourth-consecutive year, for the first time in program history.Â
Bri Burgunder concluded her Pitt-Greensburg career as one of the most accomplished players in program history. She garnered AMCC honors for a fourth-consecutive year and earned First Team accolades for a third-straight season. The 2018 AMCC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year recorded four game-winning goals in 2018, three of which were scored against conference opponents. In 2019, Burgunder started all 18 where she ranked top-10 in the conference with nine goal, five assists for 23 points. Burgunder ends her Pitt-Greensburg career as the program's all-time leader in game-winning goals (11), penalty kicks made (5) and penalty kicks attempted (6). Burgunder also ranks top-10 in points (2nd- 105), goals (2nd- 43), assists (3rd- 19), goals per game (3rd- 0.60), and assists per game (5th- 0.26).
Under his direction, the Bobcats have clinched a berth in the AMCC tournament in five of his six seasons in charge and Wigle was named the AMCC Co-Coach of the year in 2015. This past season in 2017, Pitt-Greensburg broke the program record for goals in a game, with a 10-0 victory against Wilson College.
In 2016, the Bobcats posted a 10-8-2 overall record and earned the no. 2 seed in the AMCC tournament for just the second time in program history with a 7-1-1 record. Pitt-Greensburg earned its first AMCC Tournament semifinal victory with a 2-0 decision against Pitt-Bradford and advanced to the championship game for the first time in school history.
During his six seasons in charge of the Pitt-Greensburg women’s soccer program, 17 players have earned All-Conference accolades and two players were named Newcomer of the Year (Kayleen Schwegler, Jessica Moore).
In just his first season at the helm, Wigle made an immediate impact. After a winless campaign in 2011, Wigle began his tenure in 2012 and proceeded to lead the squad to a 7-8-3 record, which was the fourth largest turnaround among the NCAA Division III ranks for that year. The Bobcats have sustained these lofty standards, securing their second home playoff game after a fourth place finish in 2013.
Wigle served as an assistant coach for the men’s team at Pitt-Greensburg for the 2010,2011, and 2012 seasons.
Wigle’s coaching career began in 1999 when he took over the U-14 Foothills Soccer Club Team. He took over a team that had won just six games the previous year and in his first year at the helm increased the team’s winning total to 12 in just one season. In 2003 he led his Foothills squad to the PA West State Championship game.
In 2001 Wigle was named the Assistant Boys Varsity Soccer Coach and Head Junior Varsity Coach at his alma mater Penn Trafford High School and helped lead the varsity program to three section titles during his tenure. He also spent two seasons as the assistant coach of the Penn’s Forest Soccer Club’s U-16 program, where he played an integral role in the programs second ever PA West Championship.
Wigle, a 1999 graduate of local St. Vincent College was a team captain of the Bearcat men’s soccer squad in both the 1997 and 1998 seasons.
