Bobcats fall to Penn State Fayette and Bethany College to open 2012 home season

GREENSBURG, PA- The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg’s volleyball team hosted a tri-match in Chambers Hall Wednesday afternoon, featuring the host Bobcats, Penn State Fayette and Bethany College.

Pitt-Greensburg opened the first of the three matches against PSUAC member Penn State Fayette.  The opener did not go as planned for the Bobcats as they dropped the opener to the Roaring Lions 3-0 (26-24, 25-16, 25-21).

UPG was led offensively by freshman Erika Spina (Birdsoro, PA, Danile Boone) and junior Jaime Barkman (Aliquippa, PA, Hopewell).  Spina posted a .533 hitting percentage tallying eight kills in 15 attempts while also dishing out 10 assists.  Not to be outdone, Barkman earned seven kills on just 11 chances (.636).

Samantha Meyers (Elizabeth, PA, Elizabeth Forward) dished out 15 assists and teammate Briana Weakland (Hastings, PA, Cambria Heights) recorded a team high nine digs.

Pitt-Greensburg was unable to pick up its first win of the season as the fell to 0-6 on the 2012 campaign with a 3-0 (25-12, 25-15, 25-7) defeat to Bethany College in the third of three games.

Spina once again led the offense with seven kills as the Bison held UPG to just 14 kills throughout the course of the match.

Meyers earned a team high eight digs and handed out nine assists.  Nika Simonson (Venetia, PA, Peters Township) also chipped in with seven digs.

Bethany College’s senior setter, Jessica Zavatchen broke the 4,000 career assists plateau in the victory.

Bethany defeated Penn State Fayette 3-0 in the second of the three games played at Chambers Hall.

Pitt-Greensburg will travel to Washington and Jefferson College for their second tournament of the season.  On Saturday, September eighth the Bobcats will face the host team at 1:00 PM followed by Allegheny College at 3:00 PM
