Bobcats Return from Bethany with Two Wins
Box Score
BETHANY, WV: The Pitt-Greensburg baseball team recorded 4-1 and 7-2 victories over Bethany College in a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon. After adding their second and third wins over the Bison, the Bobcats improve to 15-21 as Bethany drops to 10-25.
After two scoreless innings, Pitt-Greensburg posted the day’s first run on a
Mike Pearson (Beaver Falls, PA, Blackhawk) fly-out that scored
Ryan Fitzmaurice (Murrysville, PA, Franklin Regional) in the top of the third inning. Two innings later the Bobcats would post two more runs on a
Dylin Brooks (Ardara, PA, Norwin) home run that brought Fitzmaurice across home with him, stretching the lead to 3-0.
Bethany would score their lone run in the top of the fifth inning to narrow the gap at 3-1. Pitt-Greensburg pushed their advantage back to three runs in the seventh when
Anthony Maroadi's (North Huntingdon, PA, Norwin) sac fly to centerfield brought
Steven Zerbini (Greensburg, PA, Greensburg-Salem) home for the Bobcat’s fourth and final run. After seven innings Pitt-Greensburg would claim the 4-1 triumph, thanks in part to some strong pitching from a trio of Bobcats.
Starting pitcher,
Andy Cornell (Pittsburgh, PA, Baldwin)(1-2) picked up the win after holding the Bison in check for five innings. Cornell surrendered six hits and one earned run while picking up one strike out. Junior,
Joe Bon (Pittsburgh, PA, Brashear) would chip in with a solid inning of relief allowing zero hits before
Dave Coradi (Cranberry, PA, Seneca Valley) would close out the game, picking up his second save of the season.
Fitzmaurice continued his hot hitting ways with a 2-3 performance that included two runs scored and two stolen bases. Brooks led the way in RBI with two.
Game 2 began much like the previous with two scoreless innings played before Pitt-Greensburg posted runs in the top of the third. The Bobcats would tally three runs, two coming from a Maroadi single that scored
Greg Lynn (Ellwood City, PA, Ellwood City) and
Matt Moyer (Greensburg, PA, Hempfield). The third came when Maroadi crossed home on a
Steven Anderson (Greensburg, PA, Hempfield) single and a throwing error on the Bison centerfielder.
The Bobcats would add one run in the fourth and two in the fifth inning to increase the advantage to 6-0 before Bethany would plate their first runs in the bottom of the fifth. The Bison scored two runs before
Matt Kochasic (Harrison City, PA, Penn-Trafford) forced the third out pop-up to end the inning.
Pitt-Greensburg registered their seventh and final run in the seventh on a
Matt Germanoski (Ellwood City, PA, Ellwood City) single that brought Maroadi home for his third run of the day.
After five strong innings from Kochasic (3-2), who picked up the win after surrendering three hits and two runs with 4 K’s,
Matt Kloos (Seven Fields, PA, Seneca Valley) took the ball in the sixth. Kloos struck out two and surrendered one hit in an inning of relief. Zerbini took over in the seventh and closed the door on the Bison, allowing no hits and collecting two strike outs as Pitt-Greensburg cruised to the 7-2, Game 2 victory.
Maroadi finished Game 2 going 2-4 while leading the team with two RBI, three runs scored, and three stolen bases. Germanowski would finish 2-4 with one run scored and one RBI. Dante Whitten would also help out going 2-3.
Pitt-Greensburg will have one more game against Bethany with first pitch scheduled for tomorrow at 4:00 PM at Bobcat Park.
