GREENSBURG, Pa – The Pitt Greensburg baseball team hosted a matchup against Bethany College on May 1st. This was a non conference matchup won by the Bobcats helping them improve to 16-21 heading into the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference tournament this weekend, while Bethany fell to 11-25.

The Bobcats came into the game with a philosophy to not use any pitchers longer than 2 innings to keep their arms fresh for the upcoming tournament.  A total of six were used with Mike Pearson (Beaver Falls, PA, Blackhawk) starting the game, followed by Jeramy Kopacko (Brownsville, PA, Brownsville), Ryan Dandrea (Irwin, PA, Penn-Trafford), Brennan Rahl (Greensburg, PA, Hempfield), Steven Anderson (Greensburg, PA, Hempfield), and Dave Coradi (Cranberry, PA, Seneca Valley). This group combined to only give up five hits while striking out five batters. The runs would have been much less if it hadn’t been for poor defense by both teams resulting in a combined total of nine errors (5-Bethany, 4-UPG). The Bobcats outhit Bethany 10-5 and these 10 hits were scattered to bring in the five runs that led them to victory.

After going down 1-0 going into the bottom of the second, the Bobcats knew they needed to strike quickly and not let the game get away from them.  After Steven Zerbini (Greensburg, PA, Greensburg-Salem) reached first base on a passed ball after striking out, Coradi singled, driving Zerbini to second base. The next batter, Anthony Maroadi (North Huntingdon, PA, Norwin) then crushed a double down the left field line, scoring Zerbini and tying the game up at 1-1. Greg Lynn (Ellwood City, PA, Ellwood City) then reached on an error by Bethany’s third baseman that resulted in Coradi scoring, giving the Bobcats a 2-1 lead. After Dylin Brooks (Ardara, PA, Norwin) led off the third inning with a single he was moved around to third where he then scored on a wild pitch, making the score 3-1.

The pitching continued to hold the door shut until Bethany had a three run fifth inning, giving the Bison the lead, 4-3. Anderson crushed a ball to centerfield that resulted in a sac-fly, scoring Ryan Fitzmaurice (Murrysville, PA, Franklin Regional), and helping his cause because he was brought into pitch the top of the seventh to get the remaining out.  Later in the inning Matt Germanoski (Ellwood City, PA, Ellwood City) hit an infield single that brought in Anthony Bozzuto (Greensburg, PA, Hempfield) to give the Bobcats the lead at 5-4.

This score remained the same throughout the rest of the game as Anderson and Coradi combined to shut the door the final two innings. Coradi had a perfect ninth inning to record his third save of the season. Anderson was credited with the win as he improved to 3-4 on the season.

Lynn had an impressive three steals on the day.  Maroadi added one more steal and also had two hits, one being the double in the second inning that put the Bobcats on the board. Coradi went 2-4 with one run scored while also recording the save.

The AMCC’s #5 seeded Bobcats will play their next game on Saturday, May 4th in part of a three game series at #4 Pitt-Bradford for a chance to advance to the conference semifinals
