GREENSBURG, PA: The Pitt-Greensburg women's basketball team dropped a back and forth affair to Waynesburg University, 72-62 Tuesday evening. A second half surge with under 13 minutes remaining by the Yellow Jackets erased a seven point Bobcat advantage to hand the home team to their first loss of the season. Pitt-Greensburg now sits at 1-1 on the early season while Waynesburg also improves to 1-1.
The first half would see the lead change on eight separate occasions with Waynesburg holding a five point lead at 28-23 when the teams broke for halftime. Neither team would shoot well in the opening half with UPG converting just 32% from the floor and 17% from three. The Yellow Jackets wouldn't fare much better finishing just 33% of their shots and 0-8 from behind the three point arc.
The second half would see the scoring pick up with the Bobcats coming out of the gates hot. An
Emily Nelson (New Stanton, PA, Hempfield) three-pointer at the 12:49 mark would give UPG a seven point lead but Waynesburg would battle back and chip into the lead over the next four minutes. After relinquishing the advantage at the 8:53 mark, Pitt-Greensburg would grab it back, 48-47 on a
Kayla Dames (Oakdale, PA, Chartiers Valley) jumper with 7:10 to play. As the teams traded baskets down the stretch, Waynesburg would regain the lead with 4:00 to play, 55-54, this time holding on to hand Pitt-Greensburg the 72-62 loss.
The Bobcats were very active on the boards, outrebounding Waynesburg 46-34, but a tough shooting night would seal their fate. UPG converted just 37% from the floor, 18% from three, and 59% from the charity stripe.
Nelson and
Morgan Biddle (Flinton, PA, Glendale) would both finish in double figures on the night. Nelson ended up with 21 points while Biddle scored 11 while pulling down seven boards.Â
Casey Hamilton (Greensburg, PA, Hempfield) led the way on the boards with a double-digit effort of 10.
Pitt-Greensburg travels to Mechanicsburg, PA next to participate in the Messiah-Hampton Inn Tip-Off Tournament. The Bobcats first game tips-off Friday, November 21
