Women's Soccer ties on the road at Franciscan

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio: The Pitt-Greensburg women's soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw on Wednesday afternoon at Franciscan University.

The Bobcats remain in the thick of things in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play, as they are now 5-1-2 in conference play and 6-6-3 overall. The Barons sit at 2-4-1 in AMCC play and 6-7-1 on the season.

Offense was difficult to come by in this game, as the game remained scoreless after the first half. The Bobcats did have a good opportunity to score in the 30th minute, when a Kayleen Schwegler (Aliquippa, PA) shot hit the post, but they could not capitalize.

Pitt-Greensburg finally broke through in the 74th minute. Courtney Carroll (Irwin, PA) took a shot over Baron netminder Sarah Luebking and into the corner of the net to give the Bobcats a 1-0 advantage.

The Bobcats appeared to have the game in hand in the final minutes, but a penalty in the box in the final ten seconds of regulation time would prove costly. Franciscan brought their Luebking out from their net to take the penalty shot. Shannon Edwards (Fayetteville, PA) would come up with the initial save, but the ball would roll back to the foot of Luebking, who took another shot and found the back of the net with two seconds left to tie the game for the Barons.

Edwards would come up with three huge saves in the overtime periods, and the Bobcat offense was unable to register a shot on goal over the final twenty minutes.

Pitt-Greensburg was outshot on the day 27-9. Franciscan also had the edge in corner kicks, 9-2. Edwards had ten saves on the day and Carroll took the only two shots on goal for UPG.

The Bobcats will have a tough test on Saturday, as they welcome branch campus rival Pitt-Bradford to Ridilla Field on Saturday. The Panthers are an undefeated 7-0 in conference play. A victory would help Pitt-Greensburg's chances at securing a first round bye in the AMCC playoffs. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:15pm.
