GREENSBURG, Pa:
Kayleen Schwegler (Aliquippa, PA, Hopewell) scored the game-winning goal on a breakaway set-up by teammate
Courtney Carroll (Irwin, PA, Hempfield) in the 86
th minute to lift the Pitt-Greensburg women's soccer team to an important 2-1 AMCC victory over the visiting D'Youville Spartans.
The Bobcats now sit at 2-1 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (3-6-1 overall) while D'Youville evens its record at 1-1 (4-4 overall).
Due to inclement weather over the last 48 hours, the contest was moved to Spartan Stadium at nearby Hempfield High School on a cold and windy Saturday afternoon.
UPG threw the first punch in this hard fought, grind-it-out type of game. Sophomore
Hayley Hulbert (Bethel Park, PA, Bethel Park) found herself in the right place at the right time to deflect in a corner kick from
Rachel Steinmark (Effort, PA, Pleasant Valley), giving the Bobcats a 1-0 lead in the 34
th minute of the first half.
The Bobcats dodged a couple dangerous chances early in the first half when a pair of Spartan shots in the 19
th minute each rang off the crossbar.
Just after Hulbert's goal, the Bobcats threatened to extend their lead when Schwegler was taken down inside the box, setting up a penalty kick opportunity for senior captain Courtney Carroll. Carroll's shot went off the post, and the Bobcats would have to settle for a 1-0 halftime lead.
D'Youville evened the score in the 67
th minute of the second half on a goal by Jenna Tomizzi, off of a Spartan corner kick.
Play would remained tied, setting up Schwegler's late heroics for the second time in three conference contests.
The Bobcats almost sealed the game in the 88
th minute when a
Brianna Burgunder (Moon Township, PA, Moon) free kick was barely punched out by the Spartan keeper.
UPG held on for the 2-1 victory, with all three conferences matches coming down to a late goal in either regulation or overtime.
Pitt-Greensburg keeper
Shannon Edwards (Fayetteville, PA, Chambersburg) made six saves in goal on the afternoon to preserve the one-goal victory.
The Bobcats will look to improve on their 2-1 conference mark this Wednesday (Oct 7
th) when they travel to Cresson, PA for a matchup with Mount Aloysius.
In last year's matchup in Greensburg, the Bobcats edged the Mounties 3-2 in overtime.
Game time for this Wednesday is 4:15pm.
