Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Bobcats drop home opener to Grove City

GREENSBURG, Pa:  The Pitt-Greensburg women's basketball team opened the 2015-16 season falling to visiting Grove City College.  The Bobcats would get big performances from the sophomore duo of Sylvia Stuart (Harrisburg, PA, Central Dauphin East) with 20 points and Kelsey Oddis (Lower Burrell, PA, Burrell), who added a career-high 16, but end up on the wrong end of a 78-59 final.

The Wolverines opened the first quarter with six straight points answered by a Pit-Greensburg 8-1 run, giving the Bobcats their first lead of the game at 8-7 with 5:58 remaining in the quarter.  After trading buckets over the next 47 seconds the Bobcats would once again snatch back the lead at 11-10, but unfortunately for the home team, it would be the last lead they would hold.  The next four minutes would see GCC move ahead 23-12, but four unanswered points by Oddis would cut the advantage to 23-16 as the quarter came to a close.

The Bobcats would score just nine points in the second quarter, with Oddis and Stuart combining for seven as Grove City stretched their lead to 40-25.

Back-to-back layups by Stuart to open the third would cut the deficit to 11 at 40-29, but the Bobcats would get no closer.  GCC would use the third to stretch their lead to 60-41.

An even fourth quarter where both teams added 18 points would bring us to our final at 78-59.

The Bobcats had a cold night shooting, finishing just 33% of their opportunities including an uncharacteristic 6% (1-16) from three.  21 steals by the Wolverine defense made a big difference in Tuesday's outcome considering the visitors converted 39 points off turnovers.  Pitt-Greensburg picked up eight steals of their own while forcing 28 GCC turnovers.

The loss drops Pitt-Greensburg to 0-1 to start the year but they'll be back to action on Friday and Saturday in the Washington and Jefferson Tip-Off Tournament.  First game is set for Friday night, November 20th with an 8:00pm contest with host W&J.  More details to follow on Saturday's match-up after the Saturday pairings are set.
