YORK, Pa: Senior
Jerell Figueroa (Dover, PA, Dover Area) scored his 1,000th point as the Pitt-Greensburg men's basketball team cruised to a 89-76 victory over Wilson College on day two of the York Coaches vs Cancer tournament.
The Bobcats improve to 2-1 on the season with the victory while Wilson falls to 0-3. Pitt-Greensburg held just a three point advantage at halftime, leading 38-35 but then erupted for 51 points in the second half. Coach Strickland's high-tempo offense was in full swing on Saturday, racking up 89 points on 47% shooting from the floor.
Leading all scorers was UPG senior
Rocco Contristano (Pittsburgh, PA, Keystone Oaks), a 1,000 point scorer himself, who netted 20 points along with 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Figueroa finished his memorable day with 17 points and 7 rebounds while fellow seniors
Jarrett Shannon (Duncansville, PA, Hollidaysburg) and
Marcus Thomas (Uniontown, PA, Uniontown) added 12 points and 10 points respectfully, in the win.
Figueroa becomes just the 10th Pitt-Greensburg player to score 1,000 points, joining teammate Rocco Contristano among the all-time greats in UPG history. Rocco and Jerell become the first pair of 1,000 point scorers from the same class in UPG Men's Basketball history. Figueroa was also named to the All-Tournament Team for his efforts over the weekend.
Pitt-Greensburg will be off until December 5th when they open up play in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference at home against D'Youville College. UPG ousted DYC from the AMCC playoffs a season ago in the first round. Tip-off for Saturday December 5th is set for 1pm.
