WASHINGTON, Pa: The Pitt-Greensburg women's basketball team closed out the Hyatt Place Pittsburgh South Tournament on Saturday, suffering a 70-55 loss to the Wittenberg Tigers.
The loss drops the Bobcats to 0-3 during their season's opening week as Wittenberg moves to 1-2.
Pitt-Greensburg got things started on the right foot, using the first quarter to build a 21-15 lead thanks in part to six straight points by
Lyndy Baer (Hollsopple, PA, Conemaugh Township) to end the quarter.
The second quarter would see the Tigers claw back into things, tying the game 25-25 at the 4:36 mark. Wittenberg would then move ahead 27-25 less than a minute later, but the Bobcats would use a
Sylvia Stuart (Harrisburg, PA, Central Dauphin East) layup to knot things up at 30 with :33 remaining in the half. Wittenberg would close the second quarter scoring with a layup of their own and take a two-point, 32-20 advantage into the half.
The Bobcats would fight to regain the lead 39-38 at the midway point of the third quarter thanks to a
Kelsey Oddis (Lower Burrell, PA, Burrell) layup, but succumb to an 8-0 run mounted by the Tigers over the next minute of play. UPG answered with a 7-2 run to cut the deficit to three, but Wittenberg would stand strong to take 53-48 advantage into the fourth.
A poor shooting fourth would seal the Bobcats fate as Wittenberg took full advantage and closed things out for a 70-55 final.
Both teams finished the first shooting 44% from the floor, but the Bobcats cooled off in the second to finish the game hitting 35% of their shots.
Pitt-Greensburg was led in the loss by Stuart's 14 points and
Emily Nelson's (New Stanton, PA, Hempfield) 13. Oddis led the way on the boards with nine.
The Bobcats are back in action on Tuesday, November 24
