WAYNESBURG, Pa: After a two-week holiday hiatus, the Pitt-Greensburg women's basketball team was back to action on Wednesday afternoon. Unfortunately for the Bobcats, they'd finish on the wrong end of a 78-51 final at Waynesburg University.
The nonconference loss drops Pitt-Greensburg to 4-6 on the season as Waynesburg improves to an identical 4-6 record.
A competitive first half would open up the midweek matinee, with neither team leading by more than five points during the first twenty minutes.
The Bobcats lead of five would come at the 5:43 mark of the first quarter after a pair of successful
Sylvia Stuart (Harrisburg, PA, Central Dauphin East) free throws. UPG would sit atop a 10-5 lead, thanks in part to Stuart's six points. The Jackets would knot things up at 15-15 with 1:27 remaining, but four more Stuart points would once again put the Bobcats on top. Waynesburg would add a free throw before the quarter came to a close with a 19-16 score in favor of Pitt-Greensburg.
The second quarter would see Waynesburg tie things up on two occasions before eventually taking their first lead at the 5:06 mark at 25-23. Buckets would be hard to come by as the first half closed out but it would be the Jackets taking a 29-24 advantage into the half.
A second half shooting slump would plague Pitt-Greensburg, giving Waynesburg an opportunity to extend their advantage. The Bobcats would keep things at single-digits until 3:48 remaining in the third, but an 18.5% shooting percentage would seal their fate. The Jackets would convert 49% of their opportunities from the floor allowing for the 78-51 final score.
Pitt-Greensburg was led by a trio of double-digit scorers with Stuart leading the way with 15 points.
Casey Hamilton (Greensburg, PA, Hempfield) and
Kelsey Oddis (Lower Burrell, PA, Burrell) rounded things out, each chipping in with 10.
The Bobcats will look to get back on track next Wednesday, January 6th at 8:00pm in Steubenville, OH, putting their 2-1 conference mark on the line against Franciscan University.
