GREENSBURG, Pa: The Pitt-Greensburg men's basketball team left no doubt as to the outcome of Wednesday night's thrashing of Mt. Aloysius College. The Bobcats rolled to an uncontested 111-67 victory in front of the home crowd in Chambers Hall.
UPG earned its 13
th victory of the season, improving to a 13-4 AMCC mark and moving into a 2
nd place tie with Medaille College, with one game remaining.
The loss eliminated Mount Aloysius from the playoff chase, as the Mounties fall to 6-11 in the AMCC.
MAC scored on the opening possession of the first half on an alley-oop dunk to take a brief 2 point lead, their only lead of the night.
UPG rolled up 51 first half points, building a commanding 23 point lead at the break. Senior
Brian Heinle had 14 of his 16 points in the first half, connecting on 5 of 6 attempts. UPG shot 51% from the floor, including 11 of 23 from three point range in the first half while holding the Mounties to just 32% from the floor and 0 of 12 from three point range.
Play took a strange turn in the second half, as the Bobcats continued to score the Mounties began to dramatically slow the tempo, fouling on just about every possession for about a ten minute stretch in the second half. MAC racked up 25 personal fouls in the second half, while the Bobcats got to the line a staggering 37 times, knocking down 24 attempts from the charity stripe. The extended free throw practice allowed the Bobcats to enjoy a 61% field goal percentage in the second half, dropping 60 points to bring the final total to triple digits, the first time in Chambers Hall this season.
The Bobcats were led by sophomore
Marcus Thomas who had 18 points and 8 rebounds in just 24 minutes of work. Junior
Jerell Figueroa added 17 points, while classmate
Jarrett Shannon chipped in 14 points.
Fellow junior
Rocco Contristano scored 12 points Wednesday night, bringing his career total 957, just 43 shy of the 1,000 point mark in just his third year in a Bobcat uniform. Rocco will have one final regular season game and at least one playoff game to try and achieve the feat this season.
UPG will close out the regular season with a road trip to Penn State Behrend this Saturday (Feb 21). Although Medialle holds the tiebreaker over UPG with two head to head victories, a UPG win against Behrend and a Medaille loss to La Roche would mean that the Bobcats would secure the #2 seed in the AMCC playoffs and earn a first round bye.
A loss to Behrend or a Medaille win would mean the Bobcats will enter the playoffs as the #3 seed and host a first round playoff matchup next Tuesday (Feb 24) with D'Youville College, who clinched the sixth and final playoff spot.
Tip-off at Behrend this Saturday is set for 2pm.
**Notes: With tonight's win, the Bobcats now have 13 victories on the season, the most since the 2005-06 season (18-11 overall, 14-4 AMCC). The 13 wins are the most in the Sean Strickland era, surpassing the high mark of 12 set last season.
