GREENSBURG, Pa: With Wednesday's 72-60 win over Mount Aloysius, the Pitt-Greensburg women's basketball team secured third place and the #3 seed in the upcoming Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference tournament.
The win improves the Bobcats to 11-6 in the AMCC and 15-9 on the season while Mount Aloysius falls to 7-10 in the AMCC and 10-13 overall. Already posting and improvement over last season's 14-12 overall record, another UPG win in their final regular season game at Penn State Behrend this Saturday will also surpass their 2014 conference regular season win total of 11.
Things would remain close for a majority of the opening half until a major run by the Bobcats created some separation before the halftime buzzer. A
Casey Hamilton (Greensburg, PA, Hempfield) layup with 5:09 remaining in the first kicked off a 17-3 run that took the teams to halftime with Pitt-Greensburg holding a 35-20 advantage. UPG finished the first shooting 30% from the floor and 75% (15-20) from the foul line compared to the Mounties 23%, consisting of just five made shots, and 59% (10-17) from the charity stripe.
Mount Aloysius would find their shot in the second, improving their shooting percentage to 46% to cut into the Bobcat lead. MAC would get as close as five points on two occasions, the latter with 5:00 remaining in the game. But, Pitt-Greensburg would promptly stretch the lead back to 16 after a three minute, 14-3 run capped by a pair of
Brittany Butterworth (Howard, PA, Bald Eagle) free throws stretched the score to 71-57. The Bobcats would take care of business over the final 2:09 to secure the 72-60 score and the #3 seed in the upcoming conference playoff tournament.
Morgan Biddle (Flinton, PA, Glendale) continued her stellar play with a 21 point, 8 rebound, 4 block, and 2 steal performance to lead Pitt-Greensburg.
Kayla Dames (Oakdale, PA, Chartiers Valley) finished with 12 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals while
Amanda Estok (Monroeville, PA, Gateway) rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11.
As a team, Pitt-Greensburg posted a 35% shooting percentage and forced the Mounties into 24 turnovers. They'd also hold advantages in points in the paint 22-18, points off turnovers 18-8, and bench points 20-12.
The Bobcats will wrap up the regular season with a trip to Erie, PA this Saturday for a 2:00pm tip with the Lions of Penn State Behrend. In their first meeting this season, UPG handed Behrend a 77-63 defeat in Chambers Hall.
