GREENSBURG, PA: The Pitt-Greensburg baseball team would stack 17 runs against Mt. Aloysius to take game one 17-3, but spot the Mounties seven runs in the first three innings of game two on their way to dropping the nightcap, 9-8.
After the day's events, Pitt-Greensburg moves to 7-6-1 on the season and 1-1 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference while Mt. Aloysius goes to 9-6 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
Game OneNot only would the Bobcats get plenty of run support in the opener, but receive an impressive performance from starter,
Billy Elliott (Ligonier, PA, Ligonier Valley) on the mound. After giving up a solo homerun to his first batter, Elliot would settle in to control the Mt. Aloysius lineup, while the Bobcat bats took care of the rest.
Pitt-Greensburg would bring the game even in the bottom of the second, then take their first lead of the game one inning later with a pair of runs in the third. Four more runs would follow in the fourth inning leading to an eight run explosion in the fifth. The Bobcats would then cap game one with two runs in the sixth to bring the score to our final, 17-3.
Over the course of the game, Pitt-Greensburg would tally 22 hits and commit no errors on the defensive side. The Bobcats were led by
Greg Lynn (Ellwood City, PA, Ellwood City) who finished the afternoon 4-5 with three runs scored and two RBI.
Matt Moyer (Greensburg, PA, Hempfield) wasn't far behind, going 3-4 with two runs and a team-high 3 RBI.
Mike Maleski (Pittsburgh, PA, Plum), who continues to swing a hot bat would also finish 3-4 and match Lynn's runs total, also finishing with three.
Matt Germanoski (Ellwood City, PA, Ellwood City) would round things out with a 3-4 performance with two RBI, and a run scored.
As for extra base hits, Moyer would homer, Germanoski would triple, while Lynn,
Dylan Pounds (Houston, PA, Chartiers-Houston),
Chad Jacob (Bridgeville, PA, Chartiers Valley),
Anthony Bozzuto (Greensburg, PA, Hempfield),
Tyler Lilja (Greensburg, PA, Hempfield),
Anthony Maroadi (North Huntingdon, PA, Norwin), and Maleski would all be credited with doubles.
Elliot improves to 3-0 on the year after giving the Bobcats six solid innings where he allowed three runs on seven hits and struck out seven Mounties.
Cody Menges (Belle Vernon, PA, Belle Vernon) would close out the game for UPG, giving the home team a scoreless seventh inning, allowing no hits and striking out one batter.
Game TwoThe nightcap would see the visitors jump out to an early 7-0 lead after plating two runs in the first, four in the second, and a single run in the third.
Despite the large deficit, the Bobcats would show resolve and begin to chip away at the Mountie lead beginning in the bottom of the fourth inning. Jacob would get the ball rolling with a solo homerun. A Sacrifice fly by Lilja would score Germanoski for another run followed by a two-run Maroadi homer that scored Bozzuto and cut the lead to 7-4.
An inning later, Germanoski tied things up with one swing of the bat, sending a three-run homerun off the foul pole in left field to clear the bases and bring the score to 7-7.
Mount Aloysius would get one back in the top of the sixth inning, recapturing the lead at 8-7.
A Bozzuto solo homer in the bottom of the seventh would once again bring things even at 8-8 with two innings left to play.
The Mounties would score the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth to go up 9-8 and hold the Bobcats scoreless in the bottom of the inning to take the game two victory back to Cresson.
Jacob, Germanoski, and Bozzuto would all finish game two with two hits and two runs a piece with Germanoski also adding a team-high three RBI.
A solid 4.2 innings of middle relief by
Brandon Hoener (Pittsburgh, PA, Plum) would give Pitt-Greensburg the chance to get back into the game. He'd allow just one run on two hits while striking out three batters after relieving starter, Dylan Pounds.
Brandon Rowland (Greensburg, PA, Greensburg Salem) would be charged with the loss after allowing the ninth inning run in 1.1 innings of work.
The Bobcats remain at home for their next AMCC contest as Hilbert College travels to Bobcat Park for a 1:00pm doubleheader.
