Bobcats dominant in doubleheader win over D’Youville

GREENSBURG, PA:  The Bobcat baseball team scored 28 runs over two games to earn themselves a hefty doubleheader sweep of D'Youville College.  Pitt-Greenburg would take the opener 13-2 and follow with a 15-0 shutout to pick up two important Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference wins.

After the sweep the Bobcats check in with a 4-2 conference mark and improve to 12-9-1 on the year while the Spartans fall to 1-5 in the AMCC and 2-10 overall.

Game 1
It wouldn't take the UPG long to get the offense rolling with a first inning Chad Jacob (Bridgeville, PA, Chartiers Valley) RBI single scoring Greg Lynn (Ellwood City, PA, Ellwood City) and an Anthony Bozzuto (Greensburg, PA, Hempfield) one-run double to put the Bobcats up 2-0.

Two more runs would come in the bottom of the third inning starting with a Matt Moyer (Greensburg, PA, Hempfield) single to right field that scored Matt Germanoski (Ellwood City, PA, Ellwood City) followed by a Mike Maleski (Pittsburgh, PA, Plum) double that stretched the advantage to 4-0.

The Spartans would get on the board in the fourth with a single run to cut the deficit to three runs.

The Bobcats would enjoy a huge bottom of the fourth, plating seven total runs to stretch their advantage to 10.  A bases loaded Germanoski single would bring in the fifth Bobcat run followed by a two-run single by Bozzuto.  A Moyer walk would then load the bases and set the stage for a Tyler Lilja (Greensburg, PA, Hempfield) grand slam to clear the bases and sit the Bobcats atop an 11-1 lead.

D'youville would get one back in the fifth, once again adding one run to bring the score to 11-2.

With Maleski on second and John Buerkle (Jacksonville, FL, Fletcher) on first, Lynn would deliver a two-RBI triple in the in the bottom of the sixth to bring us to our 13-2 final.

Lynn filled up the stat sheet in the opener, going 2-4 including a triple, two runs scored, two RBI, two stolen bases, and a walk.  Bozzuto wasn't far behind after a 2-4 performance with a double, a run scored, three RBI, and a stolen base.  Lilja would also go 2-4 and add a homerun, a run scored, and a team-high four RBI.  Other two hit performers included Anthony Maroadi (North Huntingdon, PA, Norwin), and Moyer.  In total the Bobcat lineup would combine for 15 hits while stealing an impressive six bases in the opener with Germanoski matching Lynn's thievery, stealing two bases of his own.

Cory Deighan (Bethel Park, PA, Seton-La Salle) picked up his first win of the season to improve to 1-2 after keeping the D'Youville bats in check.  He'd allow just two runs on five hits while striking out five in five innings of work.  Zach Fodor (West Mifflin, PA, West Mifflin)would enter in the sixth inning and shut the door on the Spartans with two scoreless and hitless innings of relief work.

Game 2
After two and a half innings opened the nightcap, the Bobcats would get to work in the bottom of the third.  They'd post five runs in the inning to give themselves the early 5-0 lead.  Lynn, Dylan Pounds (Houston, PA, Chartiers-Houston), Jacob, and Germanoski would pick up RBI's on the first four runs followed by a troublesome ball by Bozzuto hit to the Spartan shortstop that forced an error and brought Germanoski in.

A Jacob RBI double that followed a Pounds triple would plate UPG's sixth run in the top of the fifth to extend the lead to six.

Once again a big Bobcat inning would spell doom for D'Youville.  The bottom of the seventh would see nine runs cross home plate.  Lynn, Pounds, and Jacob would score twice along with single runs by Bozzuto, Moyer, and Maleski as the Bobcats batted around the lineup to go up 15-0.

Two scoreless innings would follow with Pitt-Greensburg picking up their second convincing victory of the day.

Pounds put up some impressive offensive numbers to lead UPG.  He'd finish 4-5 with two triples, one double, a team and game-high four runs scored while also tying for a team-high three RBI.  Lynn and Jacob did their part, each finishing with three hits, two runs, and three RBI.  Lynn would add a triple while Jacob picked up two doubles in the win.

Brandon Rowland (Greensburg, PA, Greensburg Salem) earned the win after pitching seven innings and allowing no runs and just three hits with a walk.  The junior pitcher would also strikeout nine Spartans before making way for one inning relief stints by Billy Elliott (Ligonier, PA, Ligonier Valley) in the eight and Pounds in the ninth.  The Bobcat relievers would also shutout the Spartans while combining for three strikeouts.

Up next for Pitt-Greensburg is a trip to La Roche College for a rematch of last year's conference championship game.  The third place Bobcats will travel to Pittsburgh to face the first place Redhawks in a 1:00 AMCC doubleheader.
