BETHANY, WV: The Pitt-Greensburg baseball team would have to settle for a share of the spoils in Tuesday's doubleheader with the Bethany Bison. The 7-2 loss in the opener would stop the Bobcats win streak at seven, but start another with a 12-7 triumph in the nightcap.
The split moves Pitt-Greensburg to 21-15-1 on the year as the Bison move to 9-24.
Game 1:The opener would see Bethany jump out to an early advantage. The Bison would pick up a run in the first, two in the second, and another in the third before the Bobcats would get on the board in the fourth. The run would come compliments of a
Matt Germanoski (Ellwood City, PA, Ellwood City) solo homerun, his fourth of the year, which brought the score to 4-1.
Pitt-Greensburg would add another in the top of the sixth thanks to a
Chad Jacob (Bridgeville, PA, Chartiers Valley) RBI single that scored
Matt Moyer (Greensburg, PA, Hempfield). Unfortunately for the Bobcats, Bethany would add three more runs in the bottom of the inning, then stymie a potential UPG rally in the seventh for the 7-2 final.
Germanoski and Moyer would lead the offense, each finishing 2-3 in and adding a run scored. Germanoski would also pick up a RBI with the fourth inning homerun.
Adam Dodson (Bethel Park, PA, Bethel Park) picked up the loss after 2.2 innings of work. He'd allow four runs, two earned on five hits.Â
Cohl Gibbs (Williamstown, NJ, Williamstown) would take the ball to end the second inning and give the Bobcats three innings of relief, giving up two runs on two hits.Â
Nick Anderson (Brockway, PA, Brockway) was next, allowing one run on two hits before making way for
Zach Fodor (West Mifflin, PA, West Mifflin) to finish out the game.
Game 2:The Bobcat bats would come to life in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader with Pitt-Greensburg plating 12 runs in the victory. They'd start in the first inning with back to back singles by
Anthony Maroadi (North Huntingdon, PA, Norwin) and
Mike Maleski (Pittsburgh, PA, Plum) followed by a third straight single by
Anthony Bozzuto (Greensburg, PA, Hempfield) that brought in run one. The single onslaught continued with Jacob and then a two-run base hit by Germanoski that brought in two more. Â
Dylan Pounds (Houston, PA, Chartiers-Houston) would then deliver the sixth straight single to bring home Germanoski and Jacob for a 5-0 UPG lead. Â
The Bison would get a pair of runs back in the bottom of the second, then add another in the bottom of the third.
Pitt-Greensburg would use the top of the fourth to answer with three more runs to stretch their advantage back to five.Â
John Buerkle (Jacksonville, FL, Fletcher) would score the sixth run thanks to a Maroadi one-run single followed by back to back RBI singles by Bozzuto and Germanoski for runs seven and eight.
One inning later, Maroadi would send a sacrifice fly to centerfield scoring
Zack Zimmerman (Derry, PA, Derry) to put UPG up 9-3.
Bethany answered in the bottom of the fifth with a single run to bring the score to 9-4.
Three more runs in the top of the sixth would once again stretch the Bobcat lead starting with a Pounds single that brought Bozzuto home. Buerkle would then add runs 11 and 12 with a two-RBi single to centerfield and cap UPG's offensive output.
The Bison would score three more in the bottom of the seventh, but get no closer as the game came to a close with a 12-7 score in favor of Pitt-Greensburg.
Maleski would pace Pitt-Greensburg in hits with three, while Pound would tally a team-high three RBI. Maroadi, Bozzuto, Germanoski, and Buerkle would each add a pair of hits and a pair of RBI in the nightcap.
Jacob earned the win on the mound, going 5 innings and allowing five runs, four earned on eight hits while striking out two.Â
Joe Stavor (West Mifflin, PA, West Mifflin) would provide a scoreless sixth then hand the ball to
Travis Sanner (Dawson, PA, Frazier) to take over in the seventh. Sanner would give up two runs on two hits and strike out two to close out the game.
One final tune-up remains for the Bobcats as they return to Greensburg for a single nine-inning game with Otterbein University on Thursday. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00pm.
