PITTSBURGH, PA:Â Despite holding a lead for a majority of Saturday's Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference baseball semifinals, the Pitt-Greensburg baseball team would succumb to six run bottom of the ninth by Penn State Behrend to fall 6-5.
The Bobcats fall one game short of returning to the AMCC Championship as their season comes to a close with a 24-18-1 mark. Penn State Behrend improves to 24-11-1 and move on to face La Roche College in Sunday's final.
After two scoreless innings, Pitt-Greensburg would put up the game's first runs in the top of the third. The Bobcats would record a pair of runs on a
Greg Lynn (Ellwood City, PA, Ellwood City) sac-bunt that brought in
Dylan Pounds (Houston, PA, Chartiers-Houston) followed by a
Matt Moyer (Greensburg, PA, Hempfield) ground out that scored
Anthony Maroadi (North Huntingdon, PA, Norwin) .
UPG would extend their advantage to 3-0 in the fifth, thanks to a Lynn one-run single that brought Maroadi home for his second run of the day.
The ninth inning would see two more Bobcat runs, starting with a Pounds RBI double to right center that scored
Mike Maleski (Pittsburgh, PA, Plum). Pounds would then come around for run five from a fielding error on the Lion's short stop compliments of a Maroadi hit ball.
Unfortunately for Pitt-Greensburg, the insurance runs added in the ninth would not be enough to hold off a six-run rally from Penn State Behrend. A two-out single by the Lion's would bring in the winning run in walk-off fashion, ending the game by a 6-5 final.
Billy Elliott (Ligonier, PA, Ligonier Valley) gave all he had in an eight inning start. He'd strikeout five while holding the Lion's scoreless over the game's first eight innings. After failing to record outs with two batters faced in the ninth, he'd make way for
Joe Stavor (West Mifflin, PA, West Mifflin). Â Â Stavor would record two outs, but fail to keep Penn State Behrend off the board on his way to earning the loss.Â
Brandon Hoener (Pittsburgh, PA, Plum) would step in next, but also fall short of collecting the final out.
Offensively, Pitt-Greensburg was led by Pounds who finished with a 2-3 performance that included a double, a stolen base, one RBI, and two runs scored.
Though today's loss ends UPG's season, the Bobcats finished 2015 with the most single season victories in school history with 24. They've reached the conference's final four for the second straight season, hosted a home playoff series for the third time in four seasons, and reached the AMCC playoffs for the fourth straight year.
