Bobcats fall victim to 2nd half rally by Geneva

PITTSBURGH, Pa: Pitt-Greensburg held a 1-0 lead late in the first half, but three unanswered tallies by Geneva College gave the Golden Tornadoes a 3-1 victory over the Bobcats in a non-conference contest Wednesday night at Highmark Stadium.

The Bobcats drop to 0-3 on the young season while Geneva stays unbeaten at 3-0.

The two teams played a scoreless eight minutes until a lightning strike delayed the game by 30 minutes.  For the majority of the first half, before and after the lightning delay, the Bobcats dictated the pace of play.

Once play resumed, UPG got on the board first in the 38th minute when senior captain Courtney Carroll broke free down the left side and beat the keeper with a low, left-footed shot to the far post.  The Bobcats were looking to head to the locker room with a halftime lead until a through ball was tipped past UPG keeper Shannon Edwards who had charged the ball towards the 18 yard line to try and make the save.  The deflected ball dribbled the rest of the way across the goal line to tie things up at 1-1 with under 2 minutes to play in the first half.

Pitt-Greensburg commanded the field in the first half, outshooting Geneva 14-10 and holding a 5-0 edge in corner kicks.  The Bobcats had a number of scoring opportunities but weren't able to cash in.

In the second half, Geneva took a 2-1 lead in the 60th minute off a goal from Heidi Mann that beat Edwards to the bottom right side. Another tally in the 68th minute by Geneva would extend the lead to 3-1 which the held for the remainder of the game.

On the night, UPG outshot Geneva 23-21 while also holding a 10-6 advantage in corner kicks.  Bobcat keeper Shannon Edwards made 11 saves in goal in the losing effort.

Pitt-Greensburg will be back in action this Saturday when they host Thiel College at 2pm as part of family weekend.  Due to ongoing improvements at Ridilla Field, Saturday's game will be played at nearby Westmoreland County Community College.  The GPS address for the field is: 145 Pavilion Lane, Youngwood PA.

In last year's meeting, Pitt-Greensburg won an exciting 3-2 contest over the Tomcats in Greenville.
