Schwegler's career day powers Bobcats past Thiel

YOUNGWOOD, PA:  Freshman forward Kayleen Schwegler (Aliquippa, PA, Hopewell) scored her first four collegiate goals to power Pitt-Greensburg to a 7-3 thrashing of the Thiel Tomcats Saturday afternoon at Westmoreland County Community College.

The four, first-half tallies puts Schwegler in the UPG record books, as she ties Jen McIntosh for most goals in a single game in school history.  Nearly ten years ago to the day, McIntosh netted 4 goals in a victory over Chatham in September 2005.

Schwegler got the Bobcats scoring started when she took a pass from senior Courtney Carroll (Irwin, PA, Hempfield) inside the box and beat a defender and the keeper to give UPG an early 1-0 lead.  She would quickly make it a 2-0 score after firing a shot just outside the box past the keeper.  Seconds later freshman Rachel Steinmark (Effort, PA, Pleasant Valley) tallied her first collegiate goal to extend the Bobcat lead to 3-0.

In the 30th minute, Schwegler netted her first hat trick by burying a shot inside the box, making it 4-0 UPG.

After a quick response by the Tomcats to make it 4-1, junior midfielder Alexandra Dimoff (Finleyville, PA, Ringgold) put the game out of reach by scoring a pair of goals, the second on an assist by freshman Brianna Burgunder (Moon Township, PA, Moon). The two teams entered halftime with the Bobcats holding a dominant 6-1 lead.

Schwegler was back at it again in the second half, taking a pass from classmate Taylor Oberle (Mt. Lebanon, PA, Mt. Lebanon) inside the box and finding the back of the net for her fourth goal of the game, giving the Bobcats their 7th and final goal of the game in the 56th minute.

Thiel would add a pair of late goals to bring the game to its final score of 7-3.

UPG keeper Shannon Edwards (Fayetteville, PA, Chambersburg) made 6 saves for Pitt-Greensburg to contribute to the win.

Pitt-Greensburg improves to 1-3 on the season while the Tomcats drop to 0-4.

Up next for the Bobcats is a trip to New Wilmington, PA for a non-conference matchup with Westminster College on Thurs (Sept 17th). Game time is set for 7:30pm.
