BUFFALO, NY: Freshman
Kayleen Schwegler (Aliquippa, PA, Hopewell) scored the go-ahead goal in the 84
th minute, her third of the day, to give the resilient Pitt-Greensburg women's soccer team a 6-5 victory over Medaille College.
Saturday marked the beginning of conference play in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference, and the Bobcats will begin 2015 with a 1-0 record (2-5-1 overall) as they march towards an AMCC playoff berth.
The Bobcats simply refused to be denied on Saturday. Despite being ravaged with injuries and traveling with just 12 healthy players, not to mention being without several key starting players, the Bobcats found a way to get it done.
After losing the lead on 3 different occasions in the game while also having to finish the game with 10 players after starting center back
Brianna Burgunder (Moon Township, PA, Moon) was issued a red card in the 79
th minute, Schwegler took a pass from teammate
Maggie Kelly (Imperial, PA, West Allegheny) and scored on a one-time shot that beat Maverick keeper Alea Wade. The Bobcats made that lead hold up and left Buffalo with a thrilling 6-5 win.
Schwegler put the Bobcats up 1-0 just 2 minutes into the game scoring on an assist by Rachel Steinmark. UPG would hold that lead until the 21
st minute when Medaille's Kalyn Compeau knotted the game at 1-1. Plenty more first-half action would follow as senior captain
Courtney Carroll (Irwin, PA, Hempfield) scored her third goal of the season on an pass from
Caitlin Welsh (Penn Township, PA, Penn-Trafford), and the Bobcats recaptured the lead at 2-1 in the 28
th minute.
Compeau's header in the 38
th minute found the back of the net for the Mavericks, again evening the score, 2-2.
Just before halftime, Burgunder took a shot from the left side of the box and beat the keeper to the left side of the goal, sending the Bobcats into halftime with a 3-2 lead.
Medaille would show their resiliency as well, as Compeau netted her third goal of the game, this time on a breakaway in the 50
th minute and we were all tied up 3-3.
The Mavericks would grab their first lead of the day in the 53
rd minute on another breakaway goal, this time from Candis Kapuscinski, and all the sudden it was 4-3 Medaille.
With a short bench and tired legs, the advantage and momentum seemed to be siding heavily with the Mavericks heading down the stretch.
Schwegler squashed any Mavericks momentum, scoring an unassisted goal in the 66
th minute to give the Bobcats life and tie the game again, this time at 4-4.
Medaille regained the upper hand in this back and forth affair less than 60 seconds later, on Compeau's 4
th goal of the game.
And in a game of just pure offense, the Bobcats answered right back just 20 seconds later, with Welsh scoring her first career goal, on an assist from Carroll and it's now 5-5.
Just minutes after Burgunder's red card , Schwegler capped the scoring in the 84
th minute, her second hat trick of her young career.
UPG made the most of their opportunities, scoring 6 goals on 12 shots on net. The Bobcats edged the Mavericks in shots 15-13 and held a 7-2 advantage on corner kicks.
Pitt-Greensburg will return home to Ridilla field this Tuesday, September 29
th, for a 4:15pm showdown with AMCC foe La Roche College.
