Strong defensive effort propels Men's Basketball over Medaille

BUFFALO, NY: The Pitt-Greensburg men's basketball team won 81-57 at Medaille on Saturday afternoon.

The Bobcats continue their strong play in conference, improving to 5-0 in the AMCC and 8-4 on the season.

Matt Darby (Cranberry Twp, PA, Seneca Valley) opened the scoring for Pitt-Greensburg with a layup on their opening possession. The Bobcats would not look back from there, as the Mavericks never got a hold of the lead all game.

A Jerell Figueroa (Dover, PA, Dover Area) jumper with 4:00 left in the first half would extend the UPG lead to 23 points, which was their largest of the first half.

Medaille would not go away, however, as the Mavericks closed to within five points with 16:07 remaining in the second half. But Pitt-Greensburg would respond, as a Figueroa three-pointer and a pair of Rocco Contristano (Pittsburgh, PA, Keystone Oaks) layups would give the Bobcats a double digit lead, which they would not relinquish for the remainder of the contest.

Contristano led the Pitt-Greensburg attack with 16 points. Figueroa, Marcus Thomas (Uniontown, PA, Uniontown), and Mike Connelly (Butler, PA, St. Joseph) all scored in double figures for UPG. Thomas also brought down a team high 13 rebounds.

The Bobcats' depth was a key factor in the game, as twelve different players made a field goal for Pitt-Greensburg.

UPG had a stellar day on the defensive end of the ball. The Bobcats forced 22 turnovers, which is their second highest total on the season. They held the Mavericks to 36% shooting from the field, and only 27% from three. Pitt-Greensburg also handled the ball well, committing only 9 turnovers all game.

The Bobcats are back in action on Sunday afternoon, as they travel to Erie, PA, to take on Penn State Behrend. Tip-off is set for 1:00 pm.
