GROVE CITY-
Paige Burk scored a career-high 17 points in her first collegiate game to lead the Pitt-Greensburg women's basketball team (1-0) to a 75-61 victory at Grove City (0-1) in the season opener on Tuesday evening in the Grove City College Arena.
Pitt-Greensburg used a balanced attack to defeat the Wolverines as five players scored in double figures.
Kelsey Oddis had 13, while
Lyndy Baer,
Sylvia Stuart, and
Jenna Cole each added 12 for the Bobcats.
Grove City went into the halftime break leading 34-29, but the Bobcats came out firing in the second half hitting 54.5% of its shot and held the Wolverines to just 12-38 (31.6%).
The Bobcats also dominated the glass in the victory outrebounding Grove City 52-30 including 17-14 on the offensive glass, and Pitt-Greensburg turned the offensive boards into 20 second chance points compared to just 12 for Grove City. Pitt-Greensburg had two players grab 10 or more boards led by Cole who hauled down a game-high 13 rebounds in her first collegiate game, followed by
Casey Hamilton who grabbed 11 boards, including a game-high five on the offensive end.
Cole also had a great day at the free-throw line hitting a perfect 8-for-8 and Pitt-Greensburg managed to get to the free-throw line as it hit 27-of-35 for 77.1% and did a great job of not fouling Grove City and limited the hosts to just 11-of-14. The Bobcats put the game away with an impressive showing from the charity stripe in the final 20 minutes knocking down 20-of-24 while Grove City managed to attempt just four attempts.
The opening 10 minutes of the game featured back and forth action from both teams as neither side held more than a four point lead in the opening quarter. Burk's three pointer with 6:13 left gave the Bobcats a 12-8 lead, but after tying the game at 12, Lexie Arkwright answered with six of her game-high 25 points and Jackie Stewart followed with a jumper to put GCC up 16-12.
Laura Buchanan went 2-for-2 from the free-throw line to give the Wolverines an 18-16 lead after the first quarter.
Stewart opened the second 10 minutes with a jumper but Pitt-Greensburg responded with an 11-0 run over the next three minutes to take a 26-20 advantage with 5:35 left before halftime.
Grove City held the Bobcats to just three points over the final 5:35 of the half and the Wolverines outscored Pitt-Greensburg 14-3 to take a 34-29 lead into the locker room.
The home standing Wolverines pushed their lead to eight on a three-pointer by Mckenzie Black with just under nine minutes remaining in the third quarter, but the Bobcats fought back and took the lead for the remainder of the game on Cole's two free-throws to put Pitt-Greensburg ahead with 4:48 left in the second half.
Grove City would keep it close in the first part of the final quarter tying the game at 55 with 7:18 left in regulation but Pitt-Greensburg sealed the victory with a great effort on both ends of the court. The Bobcats hit 10-of-14 from the line in the final quarter and held the Wolverines to just four attempts, as Pitt-Greensburg went on for the 75-61 victory.
Pitt-Greensburg returns to the court this weekend for two games as it travels to York, Pa to compete in the York Coaches versus Cancer Tournament.
