GREENSBURG- All five starters scored in double-figures and the Pitt-Greensburg women's basketball team (1-4) shot a season-high 48.5% from the field but Geneva College (2-3) knocked down 10-of-28 from behind the three-point line to defeat the Bobcats 87-83 in a non-conference matchup on Saturday afternoon in Chambers Hall Gymnasium.
The two sides remained close throughout Saturday's game with neither side holding more than a six point lead and both teams combined 54 attempts from the free-throw line.
Geneva led 38-37 at the halftime intermission, but the second half featured excellent offensive execution from both sides as they combined for 98 points and 48 free-throws.
Despite coming up just short, Pitt-Greensburg set a season-high with 32 field goals made on the afternoon and did a great job of distributing the basketball totaling a season-high 15 assists.
Jenna Cole led the way for the Bobcats scoring a game-high 22 points. Following Cole's 22 points,
Lyndy Baer notched a season-high 18 points and hit 10-of-11 from the charity stripe,
Sylvia Stuart scored 14 on 6-of-10 from the field,
Casey Hamilton had 11 points and eight boards, and
Colleen Murphy added career-highs with 12 points and seven rebounds.
Geneva had four players score in double-figures led by Callie Ford's 20 points and eight rebounds and Marissa Heaney who totaled 18 including drilling five shots from behind the three-point line.
Pitt-Greensburg held the advantage for much of the opening quarter leading by as much as five, but Jodie Carlson connected on three free-throws over the final 1:29 to cut the deficit to 18-17 heading into the second quarter.
The second quarter featured back and forth action from both sides and with 1:30 left in the half, Jeana Luciana's jump shot extended the Golden Tornado lead to 38-33, but baskets by Cole and Murphy made the score 38-37 with Geneva leading by one heading into halftime.
Early on in the third quarter, Geneva remained in the lead, but the advantage changed hands on Stuart's layup with 7:40 left and the game would remain in the balance for the remainder of the quarter as both sides were tied at 61 heading into the final 10 minutes.
The lead continued to seesaw back and forth to both teams, but Murphy's three-point with 4:55 in regulation extended the Bobcat lead to 72-67.
However, Geneva responded with an 8-0 run to take a 73-72 lead with 3:34 left in the game, but Stuart came right back and scored a layup and hit a foul shot for an old fashioned three-point play to hand the lead back to the Bobcats.
Pitt-Greensburg's advantage did not last for long as Songer came down the court and drilled a three to put the Tornadoes ahead once again.
Leading by four after a made layup by Ford, Pitt-Greensburg called a timeout to advance the basketball. Coach Erin Eaton drew up a play during the timeout and the Bobcats had an open three which Kelsey Oddis drilled to make the score 84-83 with 30 seconds left.
On the ensuring possession, the Bobcats forced a turnover to get the ball back and managed to get into the lane but an attempted layup came up just short give the ball back to Geneva. Â
The Golden Tornadoes called their final timeout to once again advance the basketball. After the timeout, Geneva drove down the lane and drew a foul sending Rachel Moore to the line, which she converted 1-of-2.
Pitt-Greensburg inbounded the make from under its own basket and drove down the lane on the offensive end, but the Tornadoes were able to force a turnover and connect on two free-throws for the 87-83 victory.
The Bobcats have a short turnaround for their next game as they return to the court Sunday afternoon (Nov. 27) for a non-conference matchup at Westminster. Tip-off for Sunday's game is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
