CRESSON, Pa: Pitt-Greensburg erased a 9 point deficit in the second half to secure a 90-87 road victory over Mt. Aloysius College Wednesday night.
The Bobcats improve to 15-9 on the season and 12-5 in the AMCC and currently occupy the #3 seed and will host a first round playoff game next week.
On Wednesday, the Bobcats came out hot, scoring the game's first 9 points on their way to a 24-10 lead just 8 minutes into the game.
The Mounties staged a late comeback, trailing just 47-46 going into halftime. UPG shot 46% from the floor in the first half including 9 of 15 (60%) from three-point range.
In the second half half, UPG trailed by as many as 9 points but staged a comeback of their own to reclaim the lead for good at 77-76 with 4:31 remaining. Mount kept it close but the Bobcats converted 4 of 5 free throws in the final seconds to secure their 12
th AMCC victory.
Leading the way for UPG was senior
Rocco Contristano with 25 points 14 rebounds on 10 of 20 shooting.Â
Jerell Figueroa netted 21 points and dished out 6 assists and grabbed 4 steals in 35 minutes of work. Fellow senior
Marcus Thomas had another big game on both ends of the court scoring 18 points while grabbing 19 rebounds. Rounding out the scoring with 15 points of his own was sixth man
Mike Connelly.
As a group, the Bobcats shot 43% from the floor and got their stroke back from three point range going 14 for 25 on the night.
UPG has locked up a top 4 seed for the second straight season and has already set a new mark for wins under head coach Sean Strickland, collecting their 15
th "W" on the year. With a victory on Saturday, the Bobcats will match their win total from 2014-15 with 13 AMCC victories.
The Bobcats will take on Penn State Behrend in the regular season finale on Saturday February 20
th. Saturday's contest will take place back on the campus of Mount Aloysius, due to an unplayable gymnasium on the UPG campus.
Before Saturday's matchup against Behrend, the Bobcats will honor their 8 graduating seniors who have undoubtedly left their mark on not only the men's basketball team but the UPG campus as a whole.
Game time in Cresson on Saturday is set for 6pm.
