FAYETTEVILLE, NC: The Pitt-Greensburg baseball team fell in their 2016 season opening series with the College of Brockport by 15-12 and 11-1 scores.
The setbacks start Pitt-Greensburg at 0-2 on the early season while Brockport moves to 4-0.
Game One:Despite spotting the Golden Eagles nine runs in the top of the first inning, the Bobcats would put up quite the fight in the opener. They'd register their first run in the bottom first compliments of a
Ryan Dodson (Bethel Park, PA, Bethel Park) single that scored
Matt Moyer (Greensburg, PA, Hempfield). After one, UPG would trail 9-1.
Three scoreless innings followed, with Brockport breaking the scoring drought with three fifth innings runs followed by a pair in the top of the sixth.
Now trailing 14-1, the Bobcats would wake up the bats with a big bottom of the sixth. A
Dylan Pounds (Houston, PA, Chartiers-Houston) three-RBI double started off the scoring, bringing
Anthony Bozzuto (Greensburg, PA, Hempfield), Dodson, and
Matt Germanoski (Ellwood City, PA, Ellwood City) all across home plate. Five more runs would score by the time Pounds came to bat for the second time in the sixth, this time delivering a two-RBI single to tally two more. A
Jake Bulick (Sharpsville, PA, Sharpsville) single capped the inning's scoring, bringing in the twelfth Bobcat run and 11
th of the inning.
The Golden Eagles picked up their 15
th and final run of the game in the top of the seventh to stretch the lead to 15-12. Unfortunately for UPG that's where the scoring would end with no hits in the bottom of the inning.
The Bobcats tallied 12 runs on 12 hits with Bozzuto and Bulick turning in 3-4 performances. Moyer and Pounds each finished the opener with two hits apiece with Pounds adding a game-high five RBI.
Brandon Rowland (Greensburg, PA, Greensburg Salem) picks up the loss after a tough first outing. He'd allow nine runs, five earned on just three hits, but make way for
Bill Minnick (West Mifflin, PA, West Mifflin) to finish out the first. Minnick did the bulk of the pitching work, giving UPG 4.1 innings and allowing three runs on five hits while striking out three.
Cam Smith (Mars, PA, Mars Area) and
Joe Zufall (Bethel Park, PA, Bethel Park) each chipped in with an inning of relief work.
Game Two:Pitt-Greensburg struck first in the nightcap, plating the game's first run in the top of the first inning. A Gernamoski single up the middle brought
Greg Lynn (Ellwood City, PA, Ellwood City) in from third for the early 1-0 Bobcat advantage.
Brockport answered with a pair of second inning runs and incrementally increased their advantage with nine more runs over the next four innings.
The Bobcats scattered eight hits over the seven inning game but would fail to score another run on their way to the 11-1 defeat.
Brandon Hoener (Pittsburgh, PA, Plum) was charged with the game two loss after 4.1 innings of work. He'd allow eight runs, seven earned on 10 hits.
Mike Parlak (Connellsville, PA, Connellsville) stepped in to close out the fifth and worked through the sixth, striking out two batters and giving up three runs.
Pitt-Greensburg will look to turn things around tomorrow with a 12:00pm matchup with former AMCC foe and #10 ranked Frostburg State.
