AGUADILLA, PR: The Pitt-Greensburg baseball team opened the inaugural Clemente Cup with an 11-5 victory over Penn State Abington, fueled by five-run eighth inning.
The win evened the Bobcats record at 2-2 on the young season while moving Abington to 0-5 to start their year.
Head Coach Anthony William's team jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the top of the first, highlighted by a two-run double of the bat of junior Jake Bulick (Sharpsville, PA, Sharpsville). On the mound senior Brandon Rowland (Greensburg, PA, Greensburg Salem) kept the Lions at bay, allowing just three hits and two runs in earning the victory. After PSA touched up the Bobcat bullpen to pull within 6-5, Williams squad responded with five runs in the eighth. The big blow would once again come from Bulick who connected on a two-run single that gave the Bobcats the cushion they would need for the victory.
The Bobcats outhit the Lions 12-6 and the offensive fireworks were led by senior catcher Anthony Bozzuto (Greensburg, PA, Hempfield) who finished with three hits, two runs, two RBI, and two walks.
Freshman transfer, Joe Zufall (Bethel Park, PA, Bethel Park) earned his first career save after stifling the Abington lineup for 3.1 scoreless innings.
Up next for Pitt-Greensburg is a 7:00pm nine-inning contest with SUNY-Canton later this evening.
