ANASCO, PR: The Pitt-Greensburg baseball team broke open a close 5-4 contest with nine unanswered runs over the eighth and ninth innings en route to a 13-5 victory over SUNY-Canton on Sunday.
The win improves the Bobcats to 3-4 on the year while Canton falls to 2-1.
Pitt-Greensburg got things rolling in the top of first with a one-run single from Anthony Bozzuto (Greensburg, PA, Hempfield) that scored Greg Lynn (Ellwood City, PA, Ellwood City) for an early 1-0 lead.
Ryan Dodson delivered the next run on an RBI-double two innings later to double the Bobcats advantage. Two more runs would follow in the fifth with Lynn and Matt Moyer (Greensburg, PA, Hempfield) taking advantage of a couple Kangaroo errors to sit UPG atop a 4-0 lead.
SUNY-Canton broke into the score column with a run in the bottom of the fifth to bring the score to 4-1.
The Roos rallied with four seventh inning scores, placing Pitt-Greensburg behind for the first time of the afternoon at 5-4.
The Bobcats answered with a big eighth inning starting with a Canton error on a Matt Germanoski (Ellwood City, PA, Ellwood City) hit ball that brought Tyler Geary (Connellsville, PA, Connellsville) in to knot things up at 5-5. A RBI single by Dylan Pounds (Houston, PA, Chartiers-Houston) would follow and set the stage for a two-run triple by Lynn. Moyer then closed out the inning's scoring with a one run double that completed a five-run Bobcat rally. Heading into the ninth UPG now led 9-5.
A Chris Common (Trafford, PA, Penn-Trafford) two-run double and an Ian Hart (Lititz, PA, Warwick) two-RBI single tallied four more Pitt-Greensburg runs in the top of the ninth, stretching the game out of reach for SUNY-Canton.
The Bobcat bats combined for 14 hits in the win, paced by Lynn's 2-3 performance that included a triple, two RBI, three walks, and a game-high four runs. Dodson, Pounds, Zack Zimmerman (Derry, PA, Derry), and Common each registered two hits on the afternoon, with Common entering in the eighth to add two RBI and two runs scored.
Dakota McWilliams (Connellsville, PA, Connellsville) earns the win after entering in the seventh inning and shutting down the Roos. The freshman reliever picks up his first career win after striking out two batters in 2.2 innings of scoreless baseball.
Pitt-Greensburg enjoys an off-day tomorrow but returns to action on Tuesday, March 8th for a 4:00pm game against Messiah College in Lajas Puerto Rico.
