GREENSBURG- After playing to an 88-88 draw after forty minutes of play, Pitt-Greensburg (6-11, 5-5 AMCC) and Penn State Altoona (3-11, 3-7 AMCC) needed an extra five minutes to decide the winner and it was the Pitt-Greensburg women's basketball team that came out victorious with a 104-101 victory Wednesday night in Chambers Hall.
A game that featured seven ties and four lead changes, both teams shot the ball well on the evening as Pitt-Greensburg shot 52.6% from the field and Penn State Altoona countered knocking down 49.4% percent. The 104 points scored by the Bobcats are the third most in school history, trailing only the 112 and 109 point performance that were set in 2007 and 2009 respectively.
Each side had five players score in double-figures as the Bobcats were led by
Kelsey Oddis, who tallied 33 points and five assists, while
Jenna Cole notched a career-high 30 points and 12 boards. Also registering a double-double for the Bobcats was
Lyndy Baer who scored 12 points and dished out 14 assists, which is the second most in school history. Baer now owns the top two single game assist totals in program history, as she set the mark with a 15 assist performance in the matchup at Altoona earlier this season.
Casey Hamilton helped aid the Bobcats to victory hailing down a game-high 13 boards, her second consecutive double-digit rebound performance and the eighth time she accomplished the feat this season.
Offensively, Penn State Altoona was led by Megan Wheeler who tallied a double-double with 30 points and 12 rebounds.
Leading 82-74 with 3:56 to go in the fourth quarter it looked as if the Bobcats would go on for the comfortable victory, but the Lions reeled off a 14-8 run and would tie the game at 88 on two free-throws by Shannon Zimmerman with 51 seconds left.
With just 26 seconds left in the game, the Lions had the ball with a chance to take the lead, but Brittany Boslet's three point attempt was off giving the ball back to Pitt-Greensburg.
After the final timeout by the Bobcats,
Sylvia Stuart had the ball underneath the basket and went up for a layup, but great defense by the Lions prevented the score, sending the game into OT.
Penn State Altoona led for the opening four minutes of the extra period, but
Colleen Murphy's jump shot with 49 seconds left gave the lead back to the Bobcats, a lead which they would hold on for the remainder of the contest.
The Bobcats would fend off the Lions with great foul shooting as Baer showed her senior leadership stepping up to the charity stripe and knocking down all four shots in the final 27 seconds to send Pitt-Greensburg to the win.
Pitt-Greensburg returns to the court Saturday, when it travels to Buffalo, N.Y. to face Medaille. This will be the second matchup between the two schools this season as the Bobcats took the first meeting 73-70 on Dec. 3.
