Women’s Basketball Fends Off D’Youville Saturday Afternoon

GREENSBURG- Leading by double-digits midway through the fourth quarter, the Pitt-Greensburg women's basketball team held off a late run by D'Youville to pick up a 76-69 victory in an important Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference matchup Saturday afternoon in Chambers Hall.

Pitt-Greensburg and D'Youville entered Saturday's game tied for sixth place in the AMCC standings and with the victory, the Bobcats moved into the sixth and final playoff spot. The top six teams at the end of the regular season advance to the conference playoffs.

Sylvia Stuart's layup with 4:12 remaining in regulation put the Bobcats up 70-60, but D'Youville answered with two quick baskets to cut the deficit in half 70-65. Pitt-Greensburg answered as Casey Hamilton connected on two free-throws to give the Bobcats a 72-65 advantage, but two consecutive layups by Monica June got the Spartans to within three.

After a timeout by the Spartans, Kelsey Oddis connected on a layup to give the Bobcats some breathing room with just 48 seconds remaining and Jenna Cole grabbed the a big defensive rebound on the ensuing possession and headed to the free-throw line for a chance to seal the victory.

The freshman forward cashed in both free-throws and the Bobcats fought off the late run by the Spartans for the victory.

Pitt-Greensburg had balanced scoring throughout its lineup as four players totaled double-figures led by Cole's double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Colleen Murphy, Stuart, and Oddis all chipped in with 16 to propel the Bobcats to the win.

D'Youville was by by Jean-Ann Korona's game-high 23 points on 10-of-19 from the field.

The Bobcats also dominated on the boards holding a 41-27 advantage and were extremely efficient shooting the basketball connecting on 25-of-48 for a 52.1% clip.

Pitt-Greensburg returns to the court next Saturday when it travels to Erie, Pa to face Penn State Behrend.
